Transmission temperatures

I'd keep an eye on it. Not to worry, but don't negate it either. Trannies cost too much now a days. I'd spend the $60 or $80, pending on brand, and get a 10,000lb rated radiator cooler, and run it inline with the factory. Never worry again... This Texas heat had me install a fan also. 2nd gen at 240 worried me.
After the install, and SC-2, my worries are gone.... Just my .2 cents....

 

A Derale transmission cooler will make your temp worries a thing of the past.

 

I run a Scangage in my truck. For no true good reason I set up to monitor trans fluid temp in the pan. I knew the temp in tne original configuration, and now after going to a system that does not utilize the radiator and is solely using a quality cooler setup. Temps now are about 30 degrees lower than oem.

 

Yeah, that's what I meant by SC-2. (scan-gauge 2). It's a real help when mitoring temps or voltage, or arm's or whatever.
I wired in an electric fan from a CBR 1000RR, because it moves so much air, and when it's turned on, the temps drop 15 -20 degrees, no joke. 210 degrees would be my limit. Sure transmissions need to run at a certain temp for optimal operation, but too hot for too long, and you're killing the life span of your trans.

 

I ran it after the radiator cooler. Chilly.

 

Just to verify. Gen 2 Tacoma has the return oil coming from the top port and this then goes into bottom of the new cooler and return to trans. Correct?.. B&M 13000 BTU

 

This is good to know for those that are damn determined not to change the transmission fluid before the magic 100k miles. Can anyone guarantee the tranny never went over 175 degrees? I don’t and so I change mine at 50K.

 

Anyone have the setting for the trans? I have the TC but not pan on the ultra gauge.

go to their site, they list the codes in the supplement. One mention, in the drain and fill thread a couple of us have noted the pan temp that everyone uses is about 15 F less than the Toyota temp check number. Dont know why, but its all relative

Tread revival.. Is there something to read the transmission temp that comes ready out of the box for a 2010 ?

Ultra Gauge with Tacoma pack will. If not adding it is included in the manual. You can also get a BT ODB reader and an app.

Either one is as complicated as picking the 2 PIDs that track the Pan and Torque Converter. I run the Ultra Gauge now so its available all the time but still use an ODBMX+ BT reader for expanded items.

Outside of that you get into installing a gauge and other things. If you don't want to deal with an app and have it on all the time get an Ultra Gauge or Scan Gauge (they just came out with a new and improved version I think as well)

Ultra gauge 1.4 has trans PIDs from direct order. You select Toyota Tacoma you may have to add the settings but it supports trans temps should be pre loaded if you select Tacoma but also pretty easy to add them.

Not sure if the "EM" version does, but the "MX" version certainly does.

I have transmission and torque converter temps displaying on mine.

edit: To be clear, I have the 1.4 MX.

yah that’s a good call. I know for MX only 1.3 and 1.4 do. If it’s an older one it’s not supported. I had a 1.3 I upgraded by sending to them to get 1.4. Depending which one you can have it done to older ones as well
