I have a 22 trd sport v6 4wd dcsb I bought new in Sept 22. When i remote start and let it run
to warm up a bit before I leave for work it starts out idling about 14-1500 rpm, then drops to
around 1100 after a minute or two. It then stays at that fast idle 1100 rpm, and doesn't drop
to normal idle speed even if you let it run for over 10 minutes. You have to drive it for a ways till
it will drop to normal idle speed. Is this normal on the Tacoma v6? Every f.i. truck I've had would drop to a normal idle speed after about 5 minutes or so no matter how cold it was. It is getting annoying doing a neutral drop every time I want to go somewhere. If it is normal for it to do that,
I guess I will have to live with it for now. Did a search on this site, but couldn't find anything. Also the fuel door flops around, is it supposed to be held open by spring pressure? It snaps closed, but when you open it, it isn't being held open, which kinda sucks. Thanks for any info you all
    can pass along.

Everything you describe is entirely normal. IME you've always had to drive before an engine really warms up, every car I've ever owned.

How cold is cold to you? Also, what's a "neutral drop" and why is it necessary?

Normal. My truck does the same. This is the only truck I've ever owned that seems so cold blooded. Otherwise its the finest truck I've owned to date.

Jackie,it's been around 20's-30's in the mornings, but it does it no matter the outside temps. I thought I had read somewhere this was kinda normal on the Tacoma, but figured I would ask, as it is my first Toyota. Neutral drop is when you bring up the rpms in park or neutral and slam it into drive. Kids used to do that back in the day to get the tires to squawk on their under powered high school ride, similar results to dumping the clutch on a manual.
I don't recommend the practice lol! Thanks for the info, much appreciated.

Thanks! Yea I'm loving the truck so far, just wasn't sure if it was normal or not. Didn't want to put undo wear and stress on the transmission.

As far as going into drive from neutral at those higher rpm, it's very smooth. You hardly notice it as the rpm become a more normal rate.....at least thats how my 2020 has always been.

I've spent all my life in Colorado so I'm used to that cold and worse, so needing to drive to really warm up is normal for me. And yeah I could see how a high idle is annoying on the auto, does the truck lurch when you go into gear? I figure the torque converter would absorb any shock and stay smooth if you're not on the throttle.

    Normal.
The best and healthiest way to warm up the truck is to drive it gently until it's warm. It will stay pretty cool until it's under load. And you won't waste gas going nowhere.

No lurching, it just seemed unusual for it to idle at that rpm for as long as it does. My first Toyota, so I am still learning, just wanted to make sure that was normal for it to do that.

My 23 will idle high if I have the climate control/heat on when started, if I shut off the heat the idle drops down but still a bit high. I believe the truck is trying to warm up faster with the heat on. Try no heat on at startup and see how it does.

How about the fuel door? Is it supposed to be held open by the spring, or is it supposed to move freely once fully open? I was thinking it stayed opened, but now I don't remember. It
opens fine, then swings back and forth with no tension to hold it open?

Just spray a little lube time to time on those door hinges. Actually found fluid flim works great.

when it's colder I let mine 'warm' up for a few minutes. I know people say they don't and not needed, I get that. I just hate fighting high idle and brake when getting out / in the garage or parking spaces. idk, works for me.

Engines try to maintain a working temp. Fight hard at startup in cold, less effort once everything is hot. People in extreme cold places put cardboard over front grille to prevent coolant becoming very cold at speed ... at least in the past. My Corolla was a weak little 4-banger that worked harder to keep its temp up in winter than some engines with more reserve heat.

Stealing heat from engine during warmup does delay the process.

Thanks for the tip. It seems the fuel filler door can become an issue with getting bent if it seizes up. Just saw a few threads on that while I was searching.
