I’m not confident it would pass either the strength or sharpness test, and quenching it could be…. Interesting.

I’d use a food-safe epoxy resin and put a final sharpening on that. I’ve played with some small 2-part epoxy projects and bled quite easily from it.

    Hey guys,

I am embarrassed to ask this here. But hoping someone has a good idea. I'd like to make a shifter knob for Solaris out of a block of Madrona I have left over from a previous project. It has these gorgeous veins with purples, yellows and reds all mixed in... truly stunning wood.

My problem is, short of throwing wood on a lathe and just practicing. How do I build in the draft or shape of the shifter if I don't want it perfectly round. What tool do you use to chisel as the lathe spins an old fashioned chisel (being serious)? I'm very novice. But willing to put some patients and practice into making something unique and mine. Here is a rough idea of what i want to end with. The shape is almost exactly what I would try to create.

Thank you for any advice or utube videos you recommend.

I would practice your tool techniques on a inexpensive wood first. Then I would practice on a wood that has similar characteristics as the madrona next.

You can make that shape with gouges or a skew. The skew is more advanced of the two.

I did mine by hand, but only because it's a very odd shape. I have blocks to make another one for a friend, and I'll do it freehand as well to give it that custom sculpted feel.

It depends what shape you are looking for. If you want it oblong on one side you will have to turn the headstock. Or harder, longer time would be cut the shape with bandsaw and sand with a grinder attatchment sander then finish with hand sander

This is what I was thinking. Use various saws to roughly shape it, then sand sand sand.

@G2.M6 what I can recommend is getting a long M8 bolt and an M8 T-nut. I drilled the bolt hole and Forstner'ed the set-in hole for the flat of the T-nut first, then I started my shaping. I'd measured the knob bolt in the truck first, marked up the M8 "working bolt," screwed the T-nut onto the truck bolt until it completely stopped, and then I figured out exactly how I would position the knob so the "correct" side was facing me. Then I pressed the knob blank down onto the T-nut hard enough to mark where the points would go, drilled small holes for those points, and epoxy'd the T-nut into the knob blank. Once it was cured I tested it again to make sure it stopped where I wanted it to, unscrewed it, and got to shaping.

Having the blank at the end of a working M8 bolt made it easier to handle when I was doing my rasp work.

Thank you! Makes sense. I have a bunch of healthy birch laying around. So I'll combine your experiences with tacoma27s advise to make or near make a few practice rounds! Now to get started!

We took the first 2 minutes and 30 seconds of beethoven's 5th and cut it into a solid wood block in a disc shape. Used the 5 axes router to machine.

That's pretty cool. At first I thought it was meringue pie. Now I want pie. Sad.
