Checking to see if there are other taco owners who like to go trout fishing. I've been going on and off for the past 15 years, but lately have been on the downside of it. Looking to get motivated to get back out there. Always better with taco company of course. Even looked at a couple places just past I81 for pay to play. Nothing better than some smoked trout!

I've only gotten into trout fishing within the last few years but love it as a change of pace from bass fishing!

Hoping to learn how to fly fish this year, never tried it but seems like a fun way to fish.

I did some fly fishing, but I am working to try out Tenkara fishing since it's more aligned with how I currently fish with my spinning gear. Check it out and it's a hybrid of sorts. I actually pulled away from bass fishing and got heavy into snakehead since it's very similar but that fight is awesome and the eating is the best!

yeah, I've been checking it out, but was looking for local for this instance. Time to tune up the yak and fishing gear....although I have seen my local charter capt doing lot's of carp fishing right now to have some fun.

I’m a new Tacoma owner who does a bunch of tenkara fishing for trout, most of it in Shenandoah National Park.

Sweeeet! I'll have to get an inexpensive rod and start practicing. I have never fished the Shenandoah, although I have family out in Front Royal and spend a lot of time out there (yes, I'm ashamed!). We should make plans this year!

My taco’s first trip off pavement last week was down towards Rapidan Camps on the Rapidan River. Probably the best brook trout stream in the national park.

there are a bunch of streams around sperryville & Syria too if those are closer. Basically every stream in the park has brook trout. Feel free to PM me too if you’d rather.

Appreciate that!! I've been doing fishing for bass, cats, crappie, shad, and snakehead so I have the skills (always learning). But trout is a different ball game and I have been enjoying the smoked rainbows. Wild trout though...that's so cool to C&R with a pic. Something about stream fishing is so cool.

Looks like French pole (telescopic) fishing. No reel, no eyelets & just line a couple of feet longer than the rod. My dad taught me this before fly fishing... funnily enough in France :)

It’s called Valsesiana in Italy. Fixed line fly fishing evolved all over before reels were invented. It’s fun to have such a direct connection to the fish.

Very cool. Didn't kow about the history of this in Europe. I know this is the traditional way of fishing in Asia. Funny thing is I didn't want to get into fly fishing since it was so expensive so I would use flies with my spinning gear and pretty much use the same technique as tenkara to reach the trout.
In the meantime, gonna go hit the urban ponds here by Quantico and get me some smokers!

I was back in England this summer and my Dad gave me his beloved handmade Clan 7ft/9ft combo fly rod. Whilst digging around in the rest of his gear I saw he still had the French poles. I don’t know what the proper name of these are but only know them as French poles. A 3ft outer sheath holding 3 or 4 other pieces inside that with one action (a fencing jab) all pieces slide forward into a 2.5 meter long(ish) rod. Super simple.

When we lived in CO my wife bought me a days fishing with a local fly guide, along with learning how to read quick moving rivers a couple of other things he taught me that has been useful is the bow and arrow cast and roll cast. I could see both of those being useful for Tenkara.

Those french rods sound so cool. I love the vintage stuff. I learned why I wanted to get into Tenkara based on using light lures without weights on my spinning rod....made so much sense to just get a tenkara for the flies (especially the roll cast!!).
