Fiberglass with a shell? Sketchy...

 

shouldn't be an issue. I've seen plenty of guys have GFC's and other campers on their fiberglass bedsides. Albeit they were mostly 2nd gens, but I don't see any reason why you couldn't make it work on a 1st gen as long as the weight of the camper is in the right spot

 

2nd gen bed construction is totally different, ours are all welded together and a lot of the strength comes from the folded top rails and welded seams. 2nd gen bedsides are a bolt on affair because of the plastic tray, so they have a stiffening rail for the bedside. I'm not sure I'd run a shell on glass sides.

 

Ah well I rescind what I said then. Best option for OP might to just weld on a new bedside in that case.

 

There’s a guy running a Flippac on his 4 door with fiberglass. Although he’s long travel and I think he built in some extra supports for that shell

 

Stuff a tire tube in there and fill it up to pop that out. Good as new.

Hmm, Ill have to take a closer look at what kind of support there is behind the bedside, that is a good point, that I need to consider. I could conceivably build some sort of stiffening towers off the box up to a top rail that could provide a mounting point for the shell. And, yes I do want to keep the shell.

 

I have a Leer top on my LT DC Had it for 5 yrs and no issues. Several trips to Death Valley and Mojave Rd. The inner bed provides a lot of support unlike 2nd gens. If you need more pics let me know. Someday I'll get it painted.

I supplemented my front dash cam with one watching the rear. Too many aholes on the roads anymore.

 

Advanced Fiberglas 4 inch I think. Definitely not the 7 inch.

 

Advanced fiber glass is the best looking for sure. Service is good and shipping is good. I bought a set a while ago and had them in less than a week from ordering.

Fiberwerx would be another option

 

Did Advanced fiberglass used to be called something else? The trucks on the site look familiar but the name doesn't sound familiar.

 

Yes they did but I can't remember the name. ( Glasworks? ) They were on the level of Pelfry before they were bought out. Advanced still uses their molds. A lot of guys never got their fenders for months and would keep getting the run around. I had I think 8wk lead time but they were good to go then. Haven't heard anything bad since i got mine in 2018.

 

Glassworks. But the guy running glassworks retired and his son bought him out. Thus the much better business model and actually delivering products. Was terrible before that. Basically you had to live in town to get any fenders from them.

Bought a Craftsman side-mount bed toolbox from Lowe's. It had too many issues and never should have left the factory. Returned it.
Considering a well-mount toolbox that fits behind the passenger side rear wheel well.

Left it with a mechanic to review brakes and front-end grinding noise.
