Yep, but I also spend a lot of time unloaded so I don't get much for passive regen. Even the camper I have at 6-7k lbs doesn't really work the engine hard enough for passive regen. If it weren't for regen, my overall fuel economy would improve about 2 -3 MPG overall. I track my fuel economy tank by tank and the tanks that experience regen are very noticeably lower.

It's worse than that, it jus dumps a ton of fuel into the cylinder on the exhaust cycle. That does a couple things, it obviously wastes fuel because you're throwing it in during the exhaust stroke. It also has the added benefit of fuel washing the cylinder walls which allows diesel to get into the crank case and start to dilute the engine oil. That's why I like to idle down for a few minutes if I have to stop the truck in the middle of a regen cycle. Once the truck goes into park or neutral, the regen stops so you can start getting some oil back on the cylinder walls and get the extra fuel flushed out of the exhaust.

Makes sense. Yea the added fuel super heats the DPF, just like if a gasoline engine runs rich it starts to super heat the cats

    Related to modern diesel engines....Those.

And modern ATs. "Lifetime fluid" "Sealed units", hell unless I'm towing, toyota says don't touch my ATF.

Is anything dripping on the exhaust. Grease from a driveshaft u joint or a leaking CV boot?

The F-150 has an 8.8 or a 9.75. The 8.8 is generally on the 2.7 or 5.0 unless they have the higher payload package. I think all 3.5s get the 9.75 - mine definitely has it.

Mine wants 75w-85 which is crazy money. Apparently 75w-90 is perfectly fine, just might give up a probably unnoticeable amount of fuel efficiency.

I’m researching replacement fluids now. Mine calls for the 75w-85, but the others are the typical 140 weight gear oil. I’m trying to find out what I can/should use

I plan to do the rear diff and transfer case soon. Transfer case uses Mercon LV and since mine is the clutch based torque on demand unit a fluid change at 60k is probably a good thing. I'm not going to do the front because it was done at 40k when Ford rebuilt it. I'll do spark plugs and boots soon too.

Debating on having someone else do the transmission fluid - it looks like a pain. There's a weird heat exchanger thing you need to pull to get the pan off, then you lose a bunch of coolant. Might have someone else do brake fluid too since I hate bleeding brakes and hate getting that stuff on my hands.

If I do all this stuff now, I probably won't have the truck long enough to ever need to again.

Usually thicker is fine to use (better than using thinner than what is called for). Just remember the W stands for winter, or what the viscosity would be at cold temps

Those of you with older Tacoma's still... Not many left in here... Keep an eye on your gas tank straps. My rear one has left the building lol

On a bright side 200$ and I have two new straps, pins and bolts.

Thank god I have a skid plate for the gas tank, currently the saving grace holding it in place with the front strap. Now it's being held up by a jack...

Good thing you saw that, some people drive everyday not knowing that thier gas tank is about to fall out!

I am glad I bought new straps when I had my frame replaced, mainly to install the OE "skid plate", but my original straps were not in the greatest of shapes either!

Yeah, I'm not so much concerned with the weight as i am whats in it. The 75w 85 is some hypoid oil crap. Something due to the Sterling axle. There are a lot of oil debates online, just sifting thru whats real and whats BS. The 85 operating weight also seems really light for a differential, I'm sure its a fuel economy thing. I'll figure out which direction i want to go soon.

Js312 I am a tech at a Ford dealership, the trans pan isn't that bad if you have a lift and some hose pinchers you will only loose a small splash. Transmission fluid will come out but you're changing that any way. Also as far as your rear diff goes if it calls for the 75w85 use it don't cheap out ... We rebuild rear ends all the time.... Harder and harder to get parts... Months waiting for for a diff parts.

Damn, good thing you noticed. Last I looked mine still looked alright thankfully

Yea more than likely for fuel economy. I have to run 85w140 gear oil in my diffs to maintain my warranty with ECGS even though tacomas call for 75w90 gear oil

I had a chat with my boy today. He definitely doesn't hit regen every 500..
Usually on the highway, and no noticeable hit to MPGs. If it happens on surface streets, he notices, and it kills his MPGs.

What year is his? Mine is almost 500 miles like clockwork, it takes about 20 minutes and MPGs are about 10-12 unloaded! Might have to have the stealership take a peak at it...

Seems dumb not to have something like that as a stock thing on the dash or display somehow..I don't know much about diesels but it seems kinda important.

Maybe it's a built in upsell thing, either for a DIY or if someone brings the truck in to have it done.
