Are you a good mechanic and a decent fabricator?

Possible? Yes. Easy and cost effective, no. If you really want 4wd I'd probably consider another truck unless you want to do something custom and money is no object.

    Welcome to the forum !!

Find a donor Truck it is a simple bolt on swap .A donor gives you all the parts in one package .

Unless your mechanically Challenged it is a remove and replace grunt work job.

    Many have done this.

Depending where you live a rusted out frame Tacoma donor might be a easy find.

Always make sure to insure things work before starting.

    If you were close .

You should read around the 1st gen section more. Many have completed this project, it’s more cost effective than you think. The hardest part is finding the parts…but if you do, it’s basically bolt on.

Curious why you would buy what you didn't really want? Screaming deal? Gift?

Perhaps the lust for off road exploring was brought about after the truck was in hand.

    Curious to know as well?

All the information you need has been posted here on TW and there are enough youtube videos out there that will certainly cover the majority of the work. I have a post here which has multiple links to content here on TW and lays out a few points to get you started.

Make sure you take a look at this thread -
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/4x4-conversion-2-7-doublecab.784492/

Be aware hunting for the parts will take the most time. Prices have gone up over the last few years so it will cost more but you can still do it on a budget. Might take a bit longer - that's all.

    Will close with this -

Don't let anyone tell you that you should just go buy a 4WD, it's too much money, you can't do it or it's a waste of time/resources. You want to do it, DO IT.

    Cheers and happy wrenching!

If you are doing the work yourself you MIGHT break even. Otherwise it is cheaper to sell what you have and buy what you want. I'd only consider it if I'd inherited the truck from grandpa and it had sentimental value.

If you buy part by part its gonna eat you alive......
certain older hard to get parts are sky high, highly inflated.

Buying a donor truck would be best bet.....
.....you should of waited and shopped a little longer and got what you really wanted.
Now your gonna have to buy two trucks to make one.

You could always try to run an ad....find someone who needs a daily driver with 4x4 that wants something better than 14mpg.....and avoid the other maintenance problems and expense....
    that's reasson I call em 4X$'s.......

I would love to see the numbers from your experiences.

I had tried to sell my paid for 2000 Prerunner the difference that I could have sold it for and buying a 4x4 ( same vintage) was several thousand dollars I did not have to spend.

    I bought a donor for $500.00 4x4 5 speed 3.4

I added new parts as needed so for less then $1000.00 cash spent I now had a viable 4x4 plus extra parts.

By my accounting I came out several Thousand dollars ahead plus I know just what I have.

Yes regional markets do vary quite a bit . Prices have increased across the board so have the 4x4 prices.

Best way to do it is to by a parts truck with everything you need. Part out the rest. If you are not mechanical and need some one to install the 4x4 parts pay them with the profit from selling extra parts.

My whole conversion costs +/- $1,500. I made money back after selling my 2WD components. It’s not as hard nor difficult as people make it seem.

If I could do it as a clueless 17 year old years ago, you can do it too.
