    2018 TRD Off Road - 54,500 miles.

This started a couple mornings ago. It was just a small rattle at idle till it warmed up and then it seemed to go away but today it's been continuous when accelerating. It will stop once back at idle, sometimes , but once you give it gas it's starts up. I spritz some lube onto the belt thinking it was just that but it came right back. I'm wondering if it's my HPFP or maybe a pulley, the belt seems to be okay. I felt around for anything loose or jammed but didn't see much. I think I narrowed it down to around the belt or on top of the engine. Hell, It may even be just that a mouse left a gift for me.

I'm about to call the dealership ( So its on paper with Toyota and hopefully within the drivetrain warranty) but I'd imagine it wont be going in this weekend.

My guess would be a pulley bearing going TU. Question is which one!

Since you’re waiting. Pull the air box and tube, clean MAFS if needed, check and clean throttle body, check for vacuums that might have gotten lose??

Just a wild shot here but timing chain…??? there are plastic guides inside to keep the chain from flexing at speed. I saw something about this and the noise sounds familiar…also didn’t do it at idle just when rpms went up as the guide was not there and the chain starts to whiplash.

I will check my history and see if I can’t find it. The noise in your vid is very similar and same characteristics.

I wouldn’t run the engine anymore. Have it towed to a repair shop so you don’t do any additional potential damage

Amen to that! The next time this engine is started should be by your mechanic.

Think during this video my heat was on but maybe not...

On my way home today I tried the AC with and without circulation and the heat with and without circulation and it didn't affect anything.

Sounds more accessory than internal and hopefully just a belt or pulley related but spit balling maybe fan clutch.

Fan clutch is viscous fluid controlled. If it was fan clutch it either would be fully engaged like at start up ( and highly noticeable) or fully disengaged and then he would have overheating issues. The fluid either moves or it doesn’t.

Could be belt tensioner. Take serpentine belt off for a short engine run and see what happens. If it is quiet with belt off, put it back on and use a tube or pipe to your ear and point right at different pulleys and listen to see if you can pinpoint the source.

Leaning more towards an idler pulley or alternator pulley bearings are shot.

Pull the belt off and spin the pulleys. One of them is going to make some noise.
