If you need to slap the truck into lo range to drive on city streets it’s time for an auto. :amen:

I test drove a 22 manual and hated the way it shifted, I bought a 23 auto and it was my first automatic Toyota truck I ever owned. I lived in a mountain resort community in the North Ga mountains, the other 3 manual trucks had no issues with the steep inclines. My 79 was a stump puller, had no issues even with a full bed of firewood.

Glad I decided to go with the auto after reading this thread.

I’ve been on some back country roads with steep ass grades and with my 2.7 even first gear wouldn’t cut it I actually had to put it in 4lo

The clutch started to smell at 2800. Not going to ruin a truck. Backing up was the most prudent course of action

I would imagine this puts a lot of stress on the clutch plate...holding the weight of the truck while engaging/transferring torque to the drive train.

Delaware is mostly flat lands...but when I go up towards Wilmington, it is quite hilly up there.

The brake assist (on my AT/Sport) works well the couple of times I realized it engaged--I am so used to switching to the brake in preventing rollback.

    I do/did enjoy a manual transmission when last I owned a stick-shift: 1993 Isuzu Rodeo. (Traded in 1996)

I've been driving AUTO since buying a new 1996 Honda Accord LX in Eucalyptus Green...that was an awesome sedan!

Back to this subject...back in my early daze of learning manual. On steep hills, I remember being taught to rev the engine and engage the clutch to balance/prevent the rollback. Adding the parking brake as an additional support made learning manual additionally challenging.

    (Alliteration)

A few, mainly added skids. I like leaving the suspension alone. I drive forest service dirt roafs in the desert west extremely extremely too fast. Toyota nailed this suspension going 65 across desert terrain. Changing it is dumb unless you have a specific need like crawling or mud.
OP was the road wet too? I'm curious if it was a traction issue combined with lack of rpm.... you should push rpm higher. I came from the 4.0 v6 and it likes that 2 to 2.5 k range for shifting. But the 3.5 likes more juice. To be honest I rarely shift below 3.5 k anymore. Rev this fucker out!

The automatic revs the fuck out of it! Why shouldn't you? I had the auto. Trust me it redlines the motor sometimes. Even when just passing on the highway

Traction wasn’t an issue. The issue was I ran out of “engine” . Can’t rev the engine beyond where the gear ratio is holding it at 15mph. Only option was first. I’ll try getting into first a couple of times elsewhere without the slope. See if that’s an option for me at 10-15mph.

Wow! no idea how us guys that owned 105HP/138TQ 22R-E manual Toyotas survived off-roading in steep terrain…

1st gen - it's got a built engine, a turbo, and waaaaaaay too much to list. 3rd gen - basic-bitch lift, S/C, Pro Wheels

I very highly doubt that you "ran out of engine", it revs to over 6k RPM, which the ECU will not let you go past. If it wasn't designed to rev AT LEAST that high, then the engineers wouldn't let everyday consumers rev it that high because then all you'd hear about is people complaining because THEY over-revved and blew their shit up, then blame the manufacturer. You just need to give it more throttle and not slip the clutch. You can release the clutch smoothly, without going too slow so it doesn't slip unnecessarily. I stick by my theory that you just need more beans, and to let off the clutch quicker (read: not the same as dumping it)

Are you referring to the anti-rollback feature found on the Sport, not on the Off-Road?

Sounds like he placed it in third, not first.

My apologies if this was already mentioned, I'd recommend changing your tranny fluid. Switch to Redline, or Lucas, GL4. I couldn't shift my truck into 1st while moving until I switched fluids away from the stock stuff.

no need for use of a parking brake, just have to be quick with your feet. Dunno, I grew up in hilly PA driving dump trucks towing heavy equipment. Threads like these give me a damn good laugh. Ahhh….Tacoma World never disappoints with the assjackery. Whenever I am feeling a little down, I jump on here…oh man the shit that people have trouble with these chick trucks.

    @SwollenGoat

That's what I was thinking...or at least, what I was taught in preventing the engine from dying while trying! lol

Agreed...some of the topics of discussion on TW are quite humorous.

No, not that. I have an OR so it doesn't have that feature. This just fully engages the parking break regardless of how lite you pull the handle

I have taken my first gen with the 2.4 up the same hill with the auto. It can’t go past 20mph. Quite terrifying really. you essentially get a running start at 35mph and it slowly goes down to 20 while screaming at full throttle. It is what it is.

The 3rd gen got artificially slowed down by the mail truck and then didn’t have enough power/torque in 2nd to maintain 20mph and accelerate. I unfortunately couldn’t put it into first without coming to a halt first

Come to my hill and teach me how to drive, willing to spot you a whiskey/beer of your choice, if you think you would have done things differently. I’d like to hear it
