I’ve gotten used to mine, it took a while. You really have to listen to it, works better when the stereo isn’t blasting.

I taught myself how to drive a manual on old work trucks at work, since that's what they had and I didn't know anyone that drove a stick before that. These were trucks with plenty of miles on them everything was nice and broke in.

I decided to buy a new car with a 5spd, I never drove a car with a stick before that. Test drive went fine and most of the time I didn't have any problems. Then I started stalling the thing at the light. I soon realized I kept trying to start of in 3rd, and letting the clutch out as if it was in 1st. The gate was so tight I kept throwing it in to 3rd instead of 1st, never had that problem on the broken in trucks.

Just a disclaimer, I have never owned an automatic, first new vehicle was a 78 International Scout.

Sure thing! It has been awhile since I have been in that area of California, my ex-wife is from the Bay Area, have all over there and up in Tahoe a bunch. Our original PA house was out in the boonies with gnarly hills all over our property, learned to drive when I was 10, not brag, but yeah probably could teach ya a thing or two! :) LOL! If you can’t figure how to manage clutch and throttle control, toss that sumbitch in low range.

Sounds to me that the nut behind the wheel is loose. lol! I much prefer a manual over an auto ascending and descending the steeps. Current truck is an auto, there are definitely slow going situations where I am missing the manny. Have been driving my stick 1st Gen a bit, thinking about trading my 3rd in for a non-slush box I miss it so much.

    as they say YMMV!

I can totally see it doing the parking brake thing for beginners. We also had dirt bikes, ATCs, and Quads…so knew clutches long before I started driving.

My dad however, threw me to the wolves. Tossed me in one of our 1 tonner dumps pulling a Bobcat trailer. “Ok boy, drive!” Ahhh…ok. I was shitting bricks. LOL! Got it done though.

Yeah I need breaks from this place every now and then for the shear stupidity of some (most!?) the threads. The piddly shit people piss and moan about….geesh!

Have you considered the Accumulator Delete Mod (ADM)?

When I first got my truck after driving a 5M 1st gen for 18 years, I felt like I couldn't balance on the clutch while stopping on hills. It turns out that the Accumulator deadens all of the clutch feel and just dumps the truck into gear. I bought a kit that someone was selling through TW, slapped it on, and am happy driving stick again.

Sorry, I am not linking it, but if you search ADM, you can read about all the other people who dumped it to get rid of cluth slip and dump.

It seems like a fairly involved job … and I’m mostly a stock kind of guy. But thank you it is a good suggestion.

    @SwollenGoat

That is "Old School" learning. I can compare it to learning how to dog paddle with assistance and then getting left to stay afloat.

Kids are capable of overcoming such things.

One thing that keeps getting repeated (I've noticed) is how much people despise ATs. (Not including you because at least you make fun of yourself in the process)

It's one thing to totally bash a subject and separate yourself from it...and quite another to relate oneself to said subject and poke fun.

    But that's just my opinion.

OP, I’m hoping this helps you if you are still concerned with what happened that day, although what I learned today came from an automatic. Perhaps it’s worth a shot to explain what happened to you that specific day. If you have the Safety Sense system with dynamic cruise control and such, which I believe you do, then if this scenario played out while you were behind the US Postal Service, this MIGHT be your issue. Hence, this thread came to mind.

Do you turn off the PCS System before climbing? And if you do, do you turn TRAC off?

I was shocked today when I climbed a steep slope with TRAC off, 4LO. The wheel spun(near the bottom of the hill with me on the beans!), I heard the motor snap off the limiter, and the safety system or TRAC took over, dropped the rpm’s significantly and the Taco crawled up. I was surprised at the top as the motor was not limited the last time I climbed it with TRAC off.

What was the difference? I turned off Toyota’s Safety Sense with today’s climb. The system was still in control, even with TRAC off. Bewildered some, I turned ON the TSS, went down and around and did it again. TRAC off, TSS on, and that was it. No rev limiter kicking in. Full motor output.

Perhaps in your case, IF you turned off TSS going up the hill, with TRAC off, the radar noted the Postal truck and dropped your revs, and there you are perplexed scratching the cabeza.

    Just a wild guess here!!!

Ty for the suggestion. Don’t think it was the case here. Mainly a lack of engine power and my inability to switch to 1st gear at 15mph

Oh yeah, that is how they taught me to swim too! Lol!

In general all slush boxes aren’t the greatest, they have improved greatly since the old days. After having my auto 3rd Gen for a year and half now. It is mostly ok for running around empty. Moment you load it up, get up into the mountains or have a head wind. The trans all over the place, can sorta over ride it in S Mode, better but not perfect. Problem is no low end torque and mapped for fuel efficiency (or the lack there of, there are fullsizes that get better mileage). Was pulling my moto trailer the other day, into a nasty headwind, watched mpgs go into the 14s, and the trans like acting like a bi-polar crazed rabbit on crank…it didn’t know what the hell to do with itself. Thinking to myself should spent the extra $5K in the Sport to get the manny! Curse you Toyota for pulling the stick from the SR poverty trim!

Hopefully the new turbo 4 in the 4th Gen fixes it. Though my next truck will most likely be a full-size 3/4-1 Ton for pulling a travel trailer. And probably give my wife the 3rd Gen…it is a chick truck after-all. :p The 1st Gen’s engine finally gave up the ghost, she has been driving the 3rd, says you need to hurry up and buy a new truck so I can have this one!
