Thanks for all the great replies. The install on the ARB recovery point is straightforward? Any advice?

It is pretty easy. The upper connections to the main frame are just spacers. They don't clamp to the frame. This allows the frame to still crumple in a collision. So, there are some blind fastening that you need to deal with.

Not hard, just something to be aware of. Instructions attached.

Correct. It is welded to some channel sections that are welded to the frame. The lower tube is there to protect the bottom of the radiator and join the front frame horns for lateral support.

Thank you. Helpful to have the instructions ahead of purchase. Have most of the tools except for the torque wrench (which I've been intending to buy.)

I've had good luck with the HarborFreight clickers. Used them on aluminum threads with no worries. My favorite though are the torque adapters:

Works great on anything, and the reliable range is a lot lower than stated. My similar 1/2in drive one works down to 8N-m (6ft-lb).

Look into the 'nut on a stick' and decide if you can swing that install. That's the most difficult part, in terms of patience required.

That was way easier than i expected. Just make sure to bend it like they say.

Overall I found the installation to be very straight forward and easier than many made it out to be.

OK I went back to the nipple rings - I took them off but really like how the truck looks with them on - so back to being a rock crawler wannabe. I will check them periodically to make sure they don't get rusted on. In the spring I will be going to the beach and doing some NC mountain 4x4 trails so before I go at least I know to make sure they can be operational . . . . It would be pretty bad if I needed to be pulled out of a jam and they were rusted on although I am going to get a couple of soft shackles to go with my tow strap.

If those d rings are attached to the factory hooks, be very careful how you use the front for recoveries.

A great thread, especially covering the safety concerns of a dynamic recovery. Do not forget the safest and most common recovery tool should be a shovel. If you are bogged deep, then a shovel can lessen the stress on both vehicles and their components prior to extraction. There are situations where your recovery can be simplified and made safer with a little digging and or traction boards. I would assess your stuck situation with a shovel first if possible.

    A few.
Just kinda skimmed through the thread, there’s a lot of good information in here. I come from a background of work at height, rigging, helicopter lifts, and lifting big heavy things like 25 ton structure with cranes. First and foremost get some training, understand how to use your equipment, and practice using it. If your gear gets damaged destroy it and dispose of it properly.

If your in the market to buy recovery gear purchase from reputable sources like Factor 55 or ARB in the off-road industry. When looking at shackles and such look at brands like Crosby, CM, Campbell, or Van Beest, stick with domestic made hardware. Stay away from Amazon/Chinesium hardware. As a rule of thumb unless you know the forces and loads do not use anything smaller than a 3/4” shackle in a vehicle recovery and stay below the Working Load Limit (WLL) of all your recovery gear.

A few of the things that I’ve been responsible to lift, move, or rig:

Posts like this are one of the reasons I love this site. Thanks for taking the time to comment. You have, um, slightly more experience than I do in lifting heavy objects. Appreciate your weighing in.

Were you able to install without lifting/raising the truck?

My Dad was a Civil Engineer and was a Construction Superintendent on large Construction sites. He told me before I enlisted in the Army that if I wanted to make a good buck become a crane operator. I would have to start out as a helper -is it called an oiler? something like that. Of course at 18 I didn't listen.

Yep the helper is an oiler. Your post also reminded me of the classic Twain quote:

“When I was a boy of 14, my father was so ignorant I could hardly stand to have the old man around. But when I got to be 21, I was astonished at how much the old man had learned in seven years.”
