The alternators use the battery as a voltage buffer. If you remove the battery, it's possible to get voltage spikes that can damage electronics.

A couple of years ago when the battery was changed by a dealership, I was surprised to find the entire setup of door-locks/etc was still intact. This was a 2007 which was from the days of using a combination of door-lock-switches and odometer-reset buttons to program the settings instead of touch-screens.

The technician said he jumpered the vehicle contacts to preserve while the old was was disconnected. Do you know exactly what he did?

I went with the 24F X2 from Northstar. 840 CCA vs 582 of the stock battery (which you can definitely tell during cranking), but 15lbs heavier and more expensive obviously.

I run a whole slew of aftermarket lighting including 2 lightbars, winch, and a 1000 watt 5 channel amp for the radio without a hitch.

I was concerned about the increased voltage requirement so I put it on an AGM battery tender once a month. However every time I hook it up, its already in the green zone and only takes like 5 minutes to fully charge, so I believe the stock charging system is adequate for these batteries.

If you have all kinds of things from lighting audio etc. Why not a group 27 it has a good bit more reserve current it will fit. I have said this before pick them up buy the heaviest one. There are only 3 or 4 manufactures of flooded cell batteries and dozens of names.

Yes a keep alive gadget that uses low current to keep things like clocks and other memory stuff going.

Do you know the specifications, or are they so simple I should have been able to make one already?

You can make one or a good battery and jumper cables. Clamp them to the cables remove old battery even you other car would do. I have never tried but many plug into the lighter socket but I think that goes off with the key on the Tacoma. It doesn't take but a little current even some thing like a riding mower.

I think I know this answer already, but ... an emergency jumpstarter, provided you do not turn on the vehicle to initiate too much if a handshake?

They sell a small cable that attaches a jump pack to the OBD port that holds the memory while you switch the battery out.

I just had a dead battery out of my '13 for over 12 hours. Hooked up the new one and all radio presets were there as well as the correct clock time.

Have no idea how that happened. :notsure:

^The '12+ head unit is more advanced. I think the only thing you lose with a disconnected battery is the compass zone preset. On turd gens with automatic climate control, the temperature and vent direction presets are also lost

So simple a literal caveman in Afghanistan can do it. You don't even need to know how to read, just to tell the "+" and "-" symbols apart.

Do you leave the ammunition in or remove it to prevent accidental battery "discharge"?
