Oh man that sucks glad you're alright though, that's the most important thing. Curious what gave out that took out not only the steering but the brakes as well it sounds like? Maybe a ball joint or tie rod went at speed and took a brake line with it? Crazy

 

The mechanical part of the brakes seems ok. It happened on a downhill run on somewhat loose gravel. Once it started to drift off course, there was no correcting it.

I was wearing my seatbelt. I hopped out as if nothing happened. They are a safe behemoth if nothing else.

 

Ohh ok I read it as though you lost steering and braking when whatever it was broke. I started losing my brakes when my wheel bearing started to go out on my Tacoma years back, that's not a good feeling lol. But I imagine not having much control of your steering ranks up there

 

Hmm I thought 555 was basically identical to OEM. You think the outer tie road were to blame for the loss of control?

 

Missing one 13753-74210/3.00mm shim in my order...
Going to do as much as I can now and verify new valve lash/clearance on the rest of them. Then pray my local dealer can get one in quickly.

Not having a self service junkyard locally is awful.

 

They aren't the same. Even if the same company made them for Toyota, Toyotas specs are unique to their parts alone. There's a thread on here somewhere with a good cross section photo/post showing how the 555 Sankei LBJs are not identical to the OEM Toyota ones

Not to say they aren't the better aftermarket version but they're not identical

 

Yeah there's just no way to acquire another 100 for a decent price anymore. Some tool locally wants like $25K for his 220K mile one.

Try to explain that to people that offer me $2K for my flatbed. Like ok then I couldn't even replace it with a running/driving vehicle.

 

I can't say that with any certainty. Though the outer tie rod end did break. I'm not sure if it started the problem or happened simultaneously. Since I wasn't injured, it would be hard to go anywhere with it.

Oof, I'm sorry to see it but glad you're okay!
If you enjoy it overall and can transfer a lot of your parts, probably worth finding another. (If you want to go LC again...)
If you decide to part it out then switch, I'd go the 4runner route for a trip/trail truck, they're pretty comfy too. Smaller body size for your tighter trails doesn't hurt even though it's not a gigantic difference, and you can build a nice, capable truck pretty easily.

 

Fj80 rear and an fj60 front.

Just catching up on the solid axle talk: grafting an fj80 suspension is dumb, my leafs *****gasp***** ride fine on the street, even on an 11hr one way drives to go wheeling.

@CS_AR if you could part out the 100 series and get ,pst of your money back, I was thinking maybe a first gen Xterra would be a good option, especially since you're familiar with Nissans. Obviously they're not as plush as a LC, but they're the right size for trails around here and get the job done.

Huge nope.

I borrowed my friends Xterra (same model/engine) for a few months and it felt as cheap as you can get. Not something I'd want rattling apart down a trail.

 

I almost bought a 2000 instead of the LC. Honestly I wish I had, since the price was right at 2300. Yeah the fit and finish isn't as good as Toyota, but the drivetrain itself is pretty solid AFAIK.

 

Gutless, and wasted more gas than my Corvette at the time.

Theirs was well kept up too. I borrowed it while I got my motorcycle and car over to Nor Cal while I was still stationed in So Cal. Was staying at my best friend's wife's place for the last 2 months before getting out and I was using her Xterra for my errands and whatnot. Even built her a deck in her backyard.

Anyway, I daily drove it for some time and I just hated it every single minute.
