How can you make a Taco ride like a Raptor?

I’ve had a Taco on 5100’s and a 4Runner on Icons and both rode super stiff.

I’ve always loved how my gen 1 Raptor soaks up all the bumps on the way to Starbucks. It has a soft ride and is a bit floaty.

Is there a setup that would be comparable that I could install on the Taco? (Tires will be ~33” tall)

I don’t mind spending the $ for coil overs with remote reservoirs, but I want the ride to be smooth.


I don’t drive fast off road and don’t plan on sending it over trophy truck-sized jumps.

Are the tires on both the Taco and Raptor the same load rating?

 

I thought Raptors came stock with a long travel suspension setup.

No, they don’t have long travel suspension from the factory.

 

No, the Taco had C load rating. The Raptor has E rated KO2’s.

8100 Bilstein Zone Controls

 

Raptor has what would be considered a Mid-Travel setup.

More travel than a traditional F150, but what makes them work is the shock size and valving Fox and Ford developed together.

And for reference, I’ve owned and built everything from one-off Toyota long travel trucks and a Raptor.

Raptor does it all with considerable grace, but couldn’t handle the chop or hits a purpose built long travel truck can.

Never driven any of the Accutine bolt on stuff, but I believe folks like JD Fab have a mid travel kit that can still run stock fenders (with the right wheels), and fox or king shocks can be sprung and valved to ride as soft or stiff as you want.

 

8100's and a 4runner. Sell the Tacoma.

I’ve been looking at the 8100’s. I’m no shock expert, but it seems like they have the most advanced tech in the 8100’s.

Long travel can be used to describe anything over stock spec and they base all of their specs against an f150. Up until this latest generation raptors came with a mid travel at best. A buddy of mine did a raptor conversion on his f150 and it’s definitely not long travel in the sense we all imagine. A 10” travel rear shock on a Tacoma is considered long travel. You have to distinguish between commercial sales terminology and their shiesty loop holes and loose definitions, and what the actual off road industry defines.

 

Best way to achieve what you’re looking for is a generous mid travel kit that’s tuned specifically for your application. 12-14” travel rears and 10” front with resis, shock relocation is needed for the rear and a spring under kit if you go 14”. Look into Archive or JD Fab for the rear end kits. DirtKing, Camburg, Total Chaos, all great spots for front kits as well as JD Fab. Can’t go wrong with Kings, Fox, ADS, I’ve heard great things about Locked as well. @AccuTune Offroad can set you up with vehicle specific tuned shocks.

Raptors come from the factory with resi shocks that are tuned specifically for that truck. It’s not a true long travel in the off road industry definition of the term, but more of a very generous mid travel.

 

The latest gen Raptors have coil springs. My 1st gen is leaf springs

 

From what I have gathered this new raptor ford put a metric shit ton more RND into and really made the thing perform well. I haven’t seen one in action in person but I’ve heard some great things.

I thought the best suspension was my wife's '00 TJ Wrangler after I put 5100 under it. Since I installed 8100 on my Tacoma, no way.

 

Any idea if you 8100s will work on stock height suspension / stock coils?

 

Yes and No, they come with 600"/lb coils. Bolt and go.
