Yeah... Been a while..

 

Replaced the 4Runner's fan belt and idler pulleys (including the one on the tensioner). With almost 227k, the old belt had many cracks on it. All the original idler pulleys were rusted, but the bearings were in good condition and rotated smoothly.



Unlike the 2nd gen Taco, the 4Runner's oil cooler on the dual-VVTi 1GR blocks access from below. Everything is accessed from the top, had to go armpit deep. The oil cooler also crowds the lower pulley, so there was no room for a socket on the pulley bolt. I had to use the double-wrench method, held together with some duct tape to prevent slippage.



New belt and pulleys put in. Also replaced the radiator cap as cheap preventative maintenance:



Parts list:
Belt: Toyota 90916A2015 or Bando 7PK2150
Upper idler x2: Continental 49127 (made in Canada by Litens in Vaughan)
Upper idler bolt x2: Toyota 90105A0126
Lower idler: Continental 49129 (made in Canada by Litens in Vaughan)
Tensioner pulley: same Continental 49129, but re-use the LH-threaded factory bolt
Radiator cap: Motorad T37

 

see.. i figured at this rate of how much shit you replaced, you would have had a shiney new block being milled to fit inside and just bolt new parts to that

 

^Low mileage salvage yard engine for 5th gen 4Runner is about $7500 on Car-Part.com...

 

are the bolts needed to be changed or were you just being extra preventative? I have to inspect mine. Still on the original stuff. May be a next year deal with a radiator and such.

 

^The only bolt that had a risk of stripping was the lower idler (due to poor access), but the Continental part included a replacement bolt.

 

Do you need a regear for 285/75r17 on a manual Tacoma

 

^my 285/70r17s felt fine on my 2nd gens 6speed

 

@Norilsk is running 37’s on a stock geared manual. Generally speaking, once you get to a 315 or 35” tire a regear may be beneficial. @3JOH22A is also on stock gears, manual with skinny 35’s.

 

Wasn’t sure since you had the stock part number there. I eventually have to get into the front section of the engine for some preventative maintenance. When I recently did the crank seal, everything felt pretty good though.

 

nope, with such a small tires you'll be fine.
