ATRAC is a pretty neat concept and it works rather well, well enough that Toyota stopped offering LSDs in trucks after 07 (I think might have been 08). Some of the things competition is doing with brakes, computers, and lockers is much harsher than ATRAC though. I doubt it has contributed to any failures that weren't going to occur either way.

 

Maybe on the early models. I would be ATRAC + Harrop. I use the front locker proactively so nothing gets stressed or experiences a jolt. I'm regeared for 4L is 25% less than stock. That keeps down a lot of stress on the transmission. The engine and trans runs cooler off-road than on the highway. There are some rack issues that come with the later models.

 

Is the 200 series rack and tie rod setup a swap for you guys like it is the newer tacomas?

 

Not sure. The later years of 100 series had some high tech thing that requires TechStream to setup when the rack is changed.

I would like to keep my head unit with cameras. I like just enough tech to be comfortable without going into proprietary head units and HVAC controls.

 

I think some of the fancier hundo series LCs had a steering angle sensor for yaw control with traction control. I don't remember if it had steering intervention though, seems kinda advanced for how old those are now.

How’s the backseat comfort on those 3st gen 4 runners (esp for tall people)? I haven’t been in one in like 20 years.

 

I agree. It seemed a bit much for the period. Some things like that come in the last year of a given run as a test for the new generation. In Nissan world, those are the freak years to avoid.

I want to keep a model with the evap canister under the hood. The ones with the canister in the rear have fuel boiling issues in higher elevations.

You can have a decent bit of room if you move the seat back. Comfort level is bad sitting in the back of a leaf sprung 80s truck lol

 

The 98 and 99 models have a wiring harness and fuse setup that look like it came from Hitachi/Nissan that I tangled with early on. Once I understood the Hitachi connection, I could figure out stuff. The MAF and all that are Hitachi. The the 2000 models was simplified.

 

Yeah, until the 4th gen there really wasn’t a lot of space to work with . But leaf springs….ouch

I know Wen is usually the cheapest chinese trash but maybe someone has this or something similar they like

 

My brother in law is what...6'4" and he's sat in the rear. Headroom is good but the seats don't allow much room between it and the seat in front of you.

The narrow cavity where you 'step' through into the rear can make it a little uncomfortable too getting in and out. Truly, these were made for smaller people.

 

My buddy has a bigger one from a nicer brand (Jet? Idk). Air quality in his shop is pretty good. I looked at the WEN a while back but IIRC I heard of one catching fire while left running indefinitely and it scared me because I'll definitely forget to turn it off

 

I suppose I'd just wire it into a switched outlet with the lights

 

Nice, I'll try one out myself.

Wen is totally a Chinese brand; same parent company that makes some of their stuff is also used by Jet for their entry level stuff.

With that said, I have their drill press and it's freaking awesome. Easily way better than Harbor Freight's offerings that cost the same (or more).
