It will make a difference, more than just doing nothing. It’s not some magic solution like some seem to think however.

Globally the transportation sector accounts for about 20% of total CO2 emissions. Passenger vehicles account for about 40% of that for a total share of the global CO2 emissions of 8%. Not huge but definitely not insignificant.

The only places where EV passenger vehicles are viable, are in the developed world, which brings the 8% down probably closer to 1-4%

The shift to renewables must come from a majority of the world's nations with the greatest industrial outputs and from industry giants themselves to stop burning coal 24/7/365
Until then, asking Mr. and Mrs. Nobody to adopt EVs "so that maybe eventually the rest of the world will do it too" is beyond dumb.

I said transportation and electrical generation bro , they are going to go hand in hand in reducing emissions if the generation side of things is also cleaned up

We needed more of these negative Nancy’s working for NASA in the beginning. We would still be using land lines.

You’re not entirely wrong, but even a coal powered EV is better from an atmospheric emissions standpoint than a gas vehicle.

Since the US alone is responsible for 14% of global emissions we actually are in a place to make a significant impact. Wealthier developed nations produce higher per capita emissions than poorer nations and can afford to make changes for the better.

What is worse is hypocrites forcing that change while not changing themselves. Millionaires and billionaires and government officials telling the common folk they must sacrifice first years before any viable solution is found, but they get a pass in the meantime. Corporate jets pollute, their government provided limousines running gas pollute, they use plastics every bit of their lives ... but common folk must re-buy ONLY EV even when max range is about 400 miles with hours often of recharge time.

Those who think it ia good idea should lead by example instead of continuing to use the things they want removed.

By the way ... California and Maryland are setting a clock on the ban of new gas-powered vehicles regardless of industry progress making them really viable. I wonder if they will ban the licensing of gas vehicles purchased out-of-state as well. California was losing millionaires right and left a couple years back and was losing tax $$, so they passed a law allowing California Department of Revenue to chase down ex-pats for 3 years and STILL collect taxes on their income.

Canada , the UK , the EU and lots of other nations have already also set a date for the ban of any new ICE vehicle sales from 2035-2040 depending on nation

Great leadership is done so by example. Sure glad I don’t own one of those 6,000 sq.ft. houses in Arizona that is now been cut off from the municipal water supply. Builder/Developer made all their money and are long gone.

Then where is the announcement from all those who force the the "Worst Green Nightmare" on us, refusing all commercial/private jet travel, all use of gasoline vehicles, losing most/all of the plastics in their lives ...?

Not sure how that is related to what I posted but I would say a transition is just that , moving from one way of doing things to another

How in the world do you think they got the technology they have today? But sure, let's make Africa put in nuclear reactors before we do anything at all. Maybe we should make the poor people by EVs before the rich people too.

You mistake the intent. I'm not trying to convince anyone to adopt EVs, make your own choices. The issue is this thread is full of those working to demonize them and prevent the adoption, that is what is being spoken about against.

Don't invent crap up, I never once even implied a global renewable-only argument. Stow the strawman bs

You're talking about Rio Verde. Average home size is about 2300 Sqft. 2020 census puts the population at just over 2300.
6K sqft homes would be found in Paradise valley, they get plenty of water as do other expensive communities with large houses.

This is a very common misconception, that charging takes hours and hours. I have the second largest EV battery pack in production and it takes me about one hour and 20 minutes to charge from 0-100%. In reality I never do that because it is faster to stop a few extra times and only charge for 30 minutes. Not as convenient as gas on long cross country road trips for sure but not hours and hours of waiting for it to charge each time.

The most frequent trip I make is 1100 miles and usually takes about 15.5 hours factoring in gas and rest stops. In an EV it takes me 17 hours. The EV is also $200 cheaper round trip.

My bad, I apologize. I just think building subdivisions in unsustainable areas is a recipe for disaster. I used to work for a very high quality builder/developer. Built a house on a 2.5 acre property, standard protocol was the well went in the front, septic system went out back. Homeowner decided a year later that they wanted a swimming pool, out back. Pool contractor meets with the homeowner, mam your septic system is right where you want the pool, homeowner is pissed. So we now get the call, I call our septic system contractor and meet with owner on site. He says yes we can do it but it’s going to be crazy expensive. Now they’re even more pissed, should have said something in the planning phase, and it was brought up, nope no pool. Septic contractor, a very good one at that, colorful guy to boot. Looks at the homeowner and says “you wanna shit or swim. Prior planning prevents piss poor performance.

I don't know all the details of whats going on but i feel like it is more political than anything. The community is surrounded by other high end communities that are on the water grid without issues and the water supply for the phoenix valley is dependent on the Salt River. Our reservoirs, which are filled by this River and maintained by SRP, are pretty full right now thanks to a good monsoon last summer and a really wet/snowy winter, we're set to have another storm next week.

I’m pretty sure the mining for the materials that make these batteries are quite bad for our environment. Am I wrong?

They are but that’s the truth behind almost all mining/gas/oil extraction. There’s not a lot of clean ways to rip materials out of the earth and process them into something else.
