Four years in a Tacoma, a frustrating experience

I’m confused. There is plenty of torque below 3k for normal city/hwy driving. I even towed a trailer that was about 4500# and it was just fine driving at 2200-2500 RPMs unless I had to go up steep hills. Are you guys flooring it just to make it uphills or something? Or are some of you in such a hurry that you race at red lights?

Typical “truck” engine has a lot of torque off the idle yes, but it’s got no power in mid or high RPMs.

Taco has adequate low end torque at low RPMs, also great power in mid and high RPMs for passing on the highway.

If one drives fast cars all of their life I could see how some can say that taco is “slow”. This is the fastest vehicle I’ve ever owned, not hard to get a speeding ticket in a Tacoma.

Maybe some folks are in a hurry? I don’t know.

If Tacoma doesn’t have enough power for some to get around town then
I’m not sure what to say.

I really don’t know what kind of driving y’all are doing.

I can keep up with Bay Area traffic even in the hills with a 4 cylinder.

I agree. I think expectations are part of the problem.

When I travel through mountain passes over payload, with a RTT in the back acting like a sail, and trying to maintain 70-80 going uphill yes, i will hit 4500-5000 RPMs or so for short periods of time. But I’m driving a heavy brick uphill at high elevations with a NA v6 engine.

    Exactly!

It’s very easy to get a speeding ticket in a v6 Tacoma. I’m sure it’s not hard in a 4cyl either. Haha

Tacoma does 0-60 in like what, just under 7 seconds. That’s not enough power? Come on…

I just don’t see the point of this entire thread, other than to argue. If the OP doesn’t like his Tacoma, for whatever reason, sell it and get something else. There’s a lot of different vehicles out there.

There’s something insidious that happens to people’s brains when they don’t like something everyone else likes or try to like something that they just wind up not liking and it sets up a deep conflict and makes them wonder are they the ones who are wrong, are the people who like the thing wrong, or are we being lied to?

    It’s essentially a villain’s origin story.

    We live in a society.

Hey now, needless arguments have been a time-tested part of online discussion boards since the Usenet days. It's a time-honored tradition.

It's just sharing his experience. There's nothing wrong with having different views from the same experience. This is akin to somebody posting that they tried the super popular dish at a restaurant and thought they see why people like it, they don't. Nothing more than that.

Yeah I agree. I think it was a good thought out and honest review. OP was giving their experience which does not necessarily match mine but that does not mean it's not valid. Do I like my TACO because it has a bunch of cup holders or has a manual e-break ? Honestly couldn't care less. And Good looking . . . pretty much seems to be a generic looking mid-size pick up. But so what the OP does make some good points about what he (and I) like.

If you are thinking about buying a TACO it is good advice to check out the seating because obviously there are plenty of complaints especially if you are 6' or more. Power seat vs manual - sun roof or no sun roof - you would be well advised to check it out. The other thing is performance - you better take it for a test drive and determine for yourself if it is too noisy or the acceleration is too sluggish for you. Not for me but my wife and I drove it around for the better part of the afternoon all over the place (Interstate, 2 lane hardball downtown - but not off road, I wanted to but my wife was dead set against it). Anyway I was satisfied with it but I was not looking for anything "fast" really. But I was in it for a few hours and it was comfortable. Yeah, I don't even care MPG (I know that makes me a bad person) if I did I would buy a Prius (sp?).

All I'm trying to say take what the OP says and see if those things are important to you or even apply to you.

Coming from a SHO the power feels fine, absolutely no complaints in that department

A WOT the engine and transmission are great. It's what happens while you're not driving WOT all over the place that is basically worst in the class.
The turbo 4 will make the Tacoma much better truck to drive around.

Like I said even the little car trucks like Maverick have a much bigger payload, Ridgeline does too and that's not considered a truck around here.

Wouldn't overloading trucks on purpose like that lead to some pretty big legal issues if something were to happen accident wise?

Had my truck since 2016 TRD 4x4 OR. I am 6' and the seating is just fine. It never really bothered me. The only item that bothered me was how it kept on hunting for the right gear while climbing hills - fixed it with 5.29 gears. I never bothered w/ the tune, just opted to use ECT during climbs. It is a truck so gas mileage won't be in the 20s. It used to be in the high teens before bigger tires, RTT, etc...so now in the low teens. It is a truck so it won't be quiet. Comes down to expectations and what you plan on doing w/ the truck. I bought it for a purpose and it is serving its purpose albeit at the expense of some creature comforts. I got rid of the stock head unit and replaced it w/ a Kenwood w/ Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. It goes well w/ the JBL sounds. I knew I was going off the beaten path w/ the truck so earlier on, I opted to upgrade the leafpack w/ beefier shocks - I didn't want to test the limited limits of the stock truck. Its specs showed that it wasn't made to carry a lot of load. Overall, happy with the truck since 2016. It has 75k miles on it currently and no immediate plans to get rid of it.

At the end of the day, test the drive the vehicle, maybe even rent one so that you will know if it will meet your needs or not.

I try to stay below 2500 but it’s VERY hilly where I live so it doesn’t stay below that much
