On a new SR5, do you change the first oil early?

Only if one uses dino motor oils for those oic's. A decent synthetic will not cause that issue. Been told that by an engine machinist /builder here from a strictly nascar engine shop.

You can do 10,000-mile oil changes and be reasonably certain the motor won't suffer oil-related problems like VVTi valve and cam phaser malfunctions during the powertrain warranty period (5 yrs or 60,000 miles) :cookiemonster:

The break-in period for the engine is stated as 1000 miles in the owner's manual. In principle, there would be additional contaminants generated during break-in, so a filter change at 1000 miles would get rid of those from the filter. Whether that really makes a difference relative to the capacity of the filter, who knows?

You're in NH. Spend your time and money on rust protection for the frame and body if you plan to keep the truck more than 10 years.

And that means Jack. What would anyone in a strictly Nascar engine shop know about low tension rings or 10k oil changes.

They run their oil/rings for 500 miles, than everything is rebuilt.

Facts are the facts, Toyota has gone to low tension rings, and this makes there modern engines more sensitive to old oil.

Repeating the same lies will not help anyone. :der:

This guy probably forgot more than most know. He's has dealt with consumer engines in his past before entering where the real money is. Btw, low tension rings isn't all that new, oil manufactures have been developing their synthetics for years to accommodated engines with them, so that they can make those 10k mile oil changes, and then some.

Does not sound like he's worked on many Toyotas in the last 7 years, or he'd never wrongfully give false info.

Bottom line is this, We both know were right, but if I'm wrong, no one will blow there engine doing early oil changes. If your wrong, they could start burning oil, and then it's too late.
It's irresponsible for you to give out unverified info that could damage someones ride. Like I've stated, if I'm mistaken, no harm done.

I have been told by two folks about the low tension rings. My lifetime friend Mike who works at ToyotaOne service in Oakland, and the Car care nut on Youtube. Both have zero reasons to make up lies.

Yup, 5,000 max. If you watch a lot of qualified sources of information, particularly AMD (Car Care Nut) - Master Toyota Mechanic talk about 10,000 mile OCI's and the damage they eventually inflict (normally after the factory power train warranty runs out), you'll spend the extra few bucks to change at 5K intervals rather than worry about oil consumption and other issues down the road. Too easy to keep it from happening.

Just follow what the engine manufacture has recommended for oil changes, and you'll be fine. Last I've heard these are NOT sludge engines that do result in oil burning.

LED interior, license plate, and fog lights. More to come.
I change mine at 5,000 miles and will continue to do so. Car manufacturers aren't in the business of making a car last forever, they're in the business of selling you another car. If their recommended schedule gets you past the warranty period it's good enough for them.

Never heard of that before, but it sounds like a really good idea. not only cleaner generally but it would save scorching your fingers as the oil plug splashes into a hot drain pan. I used to do my own back when I was young and poor as a church mouse and I have that memory.

But let me get this straight -- "what oil thread would be complete with mention of that stupid thing". Did you mean "without"?

And finally, before I bow out for the really really last time, this to Phlogiston --> I really like that handle. I remember it from high school science class. I smile.

So, I'm kinda curious that after declaring I was finished with my questions, and saying thanks and bye, this thread kept going and going. After a few remarks of dismay at the beginning along the lines of here we go again, it seems I tapped into another instance of the evidence of enthusiasm in this forum. I just joined recently, and I'll say this is the most enthusiastic bunch of posters I've encountered. That's good.

    Now, over and out.

I did mean without yes. And there is nothing wrong with the value it’s a fine product if that’s your preference I just think it’s hilarious the way people argue on here an how the thing they do is the best and that’s just how it is. I’ve never had any of the problems it “solves” but everyone should do what works for them. It was just a joke really. You start one of these threads and a couple pages later you have people going back and forth about how many miles to go between changes and the best way to do it. I just think it’s funny.

5k. One mile over and your engine will implode. Guy at the part store who has a friend that has a brother that builds drag cars for NHRA told me so.

You should be aware that coconut oil can raise your bad cholesterol.

People are funny. It's a $40-90 oil change depending on if you do it or the dealer. There is almost no reason not to just do it preventatively. Every single time I have drained the "break-in" oil from a new car I get some nice glitter. Doesn't cost much to do and will likely have a benefit in the future (how much that might be is debatable).

Lets look at this from toyotas perspective.
Do we put in the best oil we can source or do we put in something that will do the job.

Im sure the yoda bean counters would agree with will do.
