Am I getting the run around?

I just bought a 2023 Tacoma DCLB about a month or so ago. I have noticed when I start the truck and go from park to drive, the truck makes a loud clanking/locking sound from the rear end, and the whole truck shakes from right to left. Is this normal for these trucks? I called the dealership and talked to a technician and he said every Tacoma on the lot would do this excact same thing. I like to trust people/experts, but I saved for a long time and am really young so this was a huge purchase for me. If this is not normal I would like it to be taken care of before the issue escalates. Thanks in advance!

Have a trusted friend outside the truck when you make it sound off and try to pinpoint the location.
Take the dealer tech, not the service writer, for a test drive.

It was the dealer tech I spoke to, and he said it was normal and that every Tacoma does it because “it’s meant for offroad”

It’s very hard to describe the sound. But basically if I start the truck, let it idle down, shift slowly and individually between Park-Reverse-Neutral- Drive letting the rpm’s drop each time….. once I switch into drive there is a loud locking/clunking/smacking sound that makes the whole truck wobble to the right.

Yep my 22 doesn’t make any noise either. If you shift to reverse or drive in a cold start while the initial start program is running and the rpm’s are yonit will make a jump but that’s due to higher revs on startups.

It doesn't sound like what your issue is but just to put it out there if you shift between drive and reverse multiple times repeatedly then the truck will assume youre stuck and boost line pressure expecting you to pound on it to try and get it unstuck thus making harsh gear engagement. Again, I don't think that is what you're explaining.

Correct, it does it when just going from to park to drive. But I appreciate any new knowledge. Thank you

You haven’t brought the truck to a dealer?

The close one wanted to charge me money, the one I bought it from is far, and said it was completely normal.

I don’t know about these other folks not having any noises, but I can definitely say every RWD vehicle I’ve ever owned has had significant driveline slop and it’s heard/felt exactly like this. On manuals it’s felt when you give it gas either off of coasting, changing direction, or coasting in neutral. On autos, it happens shifting between D and R because the driveshaft starts going the opposite direction and spins the diff to the limit.

Ok…so it’s supposed to clunk cause it’s an off-road vehicle…and if you have a problem with it you have to pay to get it looked at…on a brand new truck…can you get a video of the noise?

That’s basically what happened to me today, yes. I’m a college student who worked extremely hard to buy this truck. Wanted one for years. Honestly been a pretty disappointing day
