It shouldn't take more than 15-20 minutes to apply some silicone and the trim gasket on top. Service dept. is probably accounting for a busy schedule. There was a post a few back showing the trim gasket that can be ordered from Fred Haus Toyota via Walmart dot com. A tube of permatex silicone would work and can be had for under $10 too.

oem part number 00948-CHMSL for the trim gasket. It comes with a plastic overlay sheet so the silicone doesn't get smeared all over the paint.

Ya, if they are just replacing the 3rd brake light. I'd still have them check for water damage. You may not notice it now but mold is persistent. They are suppose to check for water damage on the interior.

    Welp...mine finally got me.
Got an appointment tomorrow morning...was told any from 1.5 to 4 hours.
I just washed it yesterday and it appears it's the first time it's leaked.
Got a little on the back panel/storage and carpet was a little wet on the passenger side between the seat and sill. Got it dried out fairly quick...

I just dropped mine off at the dealership (Long Beach Ca). I noticed a smell last week and thought I had something under my seats or something because it smelt like dirty sock. I noticed water on the black leather seat yesterday on my drive home and thought that was strange since nothing had been put back there in a while. Ended up finding that the headliner was soaked enough to pool up and drip. Sooooooo bummed that this happens with a trip to Sedona planned in 2 weeks… hoping there isn’t mold but my nose says otherwise.

also bummed that they won’t work on it with my shell… wish they would have told me to take it off when I made the appointment. They said they only need it scooted back a couple feet but won’t loosen the screws to do it… which I get for liability, but now I have to drive my mold mobile a couple days before I can get it off my bed and back in the shop

welp.... the dealership peaked my frustration level and I reported to the BBB>org and left a review.

    My review below:

After noticing the headliner in my Tacoma was saturated with water after weeks of heavy rain, I looked online to see what the issue could be. Sure enough, after entering my VIN number, I see that there is a Toyota Service Campaign (almost a recall) on my vehicle that replaces the gasket around the third brake light directly adjacent to where the water in my headliner was most saturated. I assumed this would be as straight forward as it gets, however several hours after dropping it off, I am told they aren't able to replicate the leaking after using a pressure washer for approximately 5 minutes (their words). I am asked to send a video that I took previously that displays the wet headliner and subsequent leaking to the service manager, and thought that would be utilized to make sense of the musty/mildew smell, coupled with a dampness that was still present. The service manager told me that I would need to pay out of pocket to diagnose this issue further or just get the gasket replaced as per the service campaign. I told him that if Toyota wasn't taking responsibility for the moldy headliner, to not replace the gasket otherwise they are off the hook because the issue could not be replicated to prove otherwise. I asked if they opened the light up to see but he said all they did was pull the headliner slightly to look for water intrusion. After checking, the headliner is not able to be manipulated to merely glance for water but they state they didn't drop the headliner. I'm not sure why they would lie, as this could be a much larger issue as spores continue to develop. I'm appalled that Toyota would risk a much larger issue of putting their customer in a moldy truck, rather than take responsibility for the issue. I have nothing to gain by this work being done, they are making what should be merely an inconvenience, a potential legal issue. I hope they make this right.

So, due to the heavy rains in SoCal this year I decided to bring my truck in for the 3rd brake light recall and 60k service, found out about the high pressure fuel pump "recall?/issue?" During their "inspection" they found the light to be cracked, conveniently, the crack is identical to ones I've seen in peoples pictures. They said it was $165 for the part and another $400 for labor. I declined since I found OEM parts for like $60. I'm thinking I might just upgrade it to LED. Any Recommendations? Do you think they're damaging the lights to avoid the recall service? On the upside, they replaced the fuel pump and saved me $1500.

Add mine to the list of Tacomas with the same identical crack in the 3rd brake light. I took mine to a dealership about a year and a half ago to get the leaking fixed and they told me to go pound sand. I'm wondering if anyone has ever had any success on getting this issue fixed by Toyota with the crack? If so I might try another dealer.

Add mine to the list of leaking 3rd break lights. I am pretty observant when it comes to my truck so hoping I noticed it the first time it was actually leaking. I have to say it was quite a bit of water coming through. Unfortunately will have to take my bed rack any RTT off which is a pain in the ass. Have an appointment on Friday to get it fixed. Threw some gorilla tape on it to hopefully keep any rain out the next 2 days. No crack in my light and have the picture to prove it in case anything funky happens.BCD14566-7FCE-4CD4-8646-129AFD225949.jpg

Had to take the rack and RTT off which was a bitch. Besides that it was an easy 1.5 hr in and out at the dealership. A wet tire repair kit and a wet jump starter pack were the only issues. Luckily no mold.

Similar story to others. Had a strange smell for a couple weeks. Came home from a work trip where my 2017 had sat in heavy rain for several days (pnw) and found mold on back seats, behind seats, seat belts, and carpet in the back was fully saturated. Dealer said they will need to have someone "special" come out to repair and replace and it would take several weeks. She said they have a similar case in front of me that has had their vehicle there for 1.5 months already. They tried to tell me I needed to rent a vehicle and pay. That wasn't going to happen and I happily walked out with a loaner tacoma.

Damn! Had the same crack in my light and just assumed it was done by the guy who installed my cap. Cost me $300.00 plus so they could go ahead with the service campaign.
