Bottle kill and Principles of Microeconomics homework. I started off not liking this one, but it’s grown on me. I picked up a replacement for it this evening as well.

Also, anyone tried Calumet Farms 16 Year Single Rack Black Bourbon? Not too often I come across a 16 year bourbon but I’m leery of spending that kind of money on a brand I’ve never tried.

Funny how a bottle will do that. If it’s one thing I’ve learned so far, it’s that the taste really does change as you work through a bottle. I’ve had some bottles that were terrible at first but then really came around later and vice versa.

Methanol content that does that. Basically while fermenting the yeast mostly give off ethanol, but there are also very small amounts of isopropyl alcohol and methanol left as well. The legal limit is like unobtainium without including stems n everything or straight up sawdust into the fermentation so most distilleries, brewers, winemakers don't even bother to separate it to keep costs down. Ethanol is the heaviest of the bunch so the others settle at the top and evaporate earlier. Hence finer stuff that's been aged longer, blended less, had the heads and tails of the distillation cut out more carefully, or barrels chosen with more scrutiny tends to give a less bad hangover and goes down easier. Also where the neck pour and rough smell immediately after uncorking come from. So in this case it's just the tiny amount of methanol/isopropyl and even some of the ethanol getting a chance to evaporate the longer you take to kill the bottle and leaving behind a stronger mix of whatever else is in the drink

Acquisitions. Nothing too fancy, but solid. Convenience store in an unremarkable neighborhood.

They also had 1.75 Buffalo Trace for $45, which I’d never seen before.

    Sourced NDP.

Word on the street is their older (14, 15, 16 year) stuff is elderly Barton whiskey, while the newer distillate (8, 12) is from somewhere else. Reviews on the 16 have been positive, and it sneaks under the $10/year threshold considered typical for aged bourbons. Haven't had it myself, so couldn't render a personal opinion.

I used to be a fan of their 8 year, but then something changed a couple years back. I wonder if that's when older stocks were diverted to the more aged whiskies and they started using a new source for the younger age statements.

Completely agree about the JS SB BP! For $60 I'll take that all day long over Blanton's IF you can find Blanton's for SRP.

Kinda want to branch out with JD and pick up the BiB and Triple Mash. Even though I've never like regular JD.

Emailed Buffalo Trace to see if I could get info on a store pick bottle I picked up in January. Pretty cool that they respond quickly and give quite a bit of info.

I've seen some store pick labels give this info too, at least barrel and bottle date but nice to know you can get it right from BT if you ask.

So envious. I want one of those 20 y/o Mellow Corns purely for the giggle factor.

Wild Turkey 101 Bourbon! It's cheap, strong, and tastes great alone and mixed. Can't go wrong.

Other top contenders are Bulliet, Knob, anything BIB, and for those who know....Mellow Corn.

TBH it’s fucking amazing. Just finished this bottle tonight and I will 100% buy another bottle. 16yr and 106 is an orgasm in a bottle. I honestly love it. Let’s put it this way a 15yr 107 Pappy goes for what 3k or more? This is $150 bucks you can’t lose. Buy it, honestly it’s very very good.

Stop telling people about Mellow Corn. It keeps creeping up in cost because the word is getting out.
