I feel like AJ is where you go when you're old and want to retire in AZ but don't really have enough money to retire.

Sounds like we have a different situation than is the norm then. All of our target systems are on private networks, in remote locations scattered across the country. Customers don’t have an appetite for frequent updates, partly because engineering hasn’t gotten around to making and validating a customer process that doesn’t require imaging to whole box.

we also have a test and release process that seems to take about a month due to red tape. They were supposed to be automating it down to 2 weeks but….doesn’t seem like we’re there yet

There is some shorter cycle time dreams around here, but I just don’t think it’s practical for us. I think we need something better tested before it ships, instead of shipping stuff we know is broken before it goes out the door.

    Thanks for the perspective!

I suppose I'd give it a go if I ever pined for playing a video game, but that just, doesn't happen.
And I use my phone as little as possible.

Yeah I neutered mine as much as I could.
I wish someone would make a 4S sized phone again. Or just a slightly more advanced version of the Lightphone II.
The guy who invented Pebble is trying to get a 12/13 Mini sized Android handset off the ground, at least that'd be something.Word is that its moving forward... https://smallandroidphone.com/

It sounds like your company could still benefit from the Continuous Delivery ideas, they'd just play out differently. On of the core ideas is that "every build is a release candidate". Once a dev commits code, that starts the "release pipeline", which is essentially a series of steps that will weed out any bad candidates for any number of reasons (automated testing of code quality, functionality, performance, security, compliance, etc, plus automated tracing, auditing, bookkeeping, etc).

The final steps in the pipeline are often manual acceptance testing and then publishing. In an ideal world, those are just formalities because the rest of the pipeline has already proven that the build is good, and because the publishing step is automated such that it's as drama-free and boring as possible. It's totally up to humans to decide when and what builds to take the final steps with.

Lots of people focus on the idea of publishing frequently, but it's the QA pipeline that really makes everything work.

Years ago, I genuinely thought Apple would make some sort of "iPhone Nano" that would essentially be an old-school feature phone/"dumb" phone. They'd sell it as a companion to an iPad, which just seemed like an oversized phone anyway.

    Obviously, I was wrong.

Be cool if they did though.
I've never understood the popularity of large phones. From a design standpoint as well as a usability one. For me the 4S was the pinnacle. If it was full screen, it'd be perfect. You could even slip it in your shirt pocket. I miss the days when futuristic design language bent towards miniaturization to a degree. For me it'd be a small phone that can do everything I need while being unobtrusive and barely know its in my pocket, tablet if I needed something bigger, then laptop then desktop.

When I was younger what I thought would happen would be small phones with full OS's on them, though skinned for mobile use when not connected to anything, but when you attach one to a monitor/keyboard/mouse setup it'll run the OS and unplug when you're ready to go, system saved as is for next time. I was wrong too haha.

Older article, but apparently a 4Runner member had tried to go through the same 'dealer' to get an LC

In a way iOS and Android have become full OSes of their own. They have total software ecosystems and user bases. But Android being Linux based does tend to lend it more toward being full featured. I would probably use an iPhone if it wasn't absolutely infuriating to side load data of any type on it.

Very true, they're basically full OSs of their own nowadays. I like the idea of Android, really I like the idea of a Linux phone minus Google. (Current options are not very commercial yet, not sure if/when they'll get there)

I know not everyone is a fan of Google but honestly the plain Android experience is pretty appealing, when it isn't skinned a bloated by the likes of Samsung (the absolute worst about modifying android) it's quite simple and competent. AOSP is an option still too, they're versions of android with google integration removed, downside there is google runs the app market so you pretty much have to side load all apps.

Yeah our QA pipeline is really solid on parts of the product, and apparently full of holes on the rest of it. The UI is consistently the worst part of every release, all the underpinning services work pretty good.

I’m really struggling with how to improve this situation. Feels like continuous delivery is a fine idea, but we need acceptance testing with teeth before we push something to the customer. I’m sick of hearing “oh yeah that’s a 30 second fix for this major issue, but we can’t get it done for 3 months because process”

So besides AOSP (is it a PITA to side load everything?) I'm guessing a Pixel would be the best/cleanest experience?

Sideloading things is annoying because you have to go find them and install the app package like say a windows computer, also the apps don't update on their own because the app market usually handles that. The Pixel is the cleanest, it is just Android with Google Integration (how it is supposed to be) but Motorola phones also are really good about leaving the OS alone, I have had some of them that were really clean.
