Is there part of this story you may have left out?? If you purchased the truck new, then this should be covered under the 3 year/36K warranty. If you go by Toyota's maintenance schedule you shouldn't have even had your third oil change yet. This is bullshit and I'd definitely be calling Toyota. If you do call them, remember to be polite and keep your cool. I have to believe they will help you out with this. I think your dealer is trying to get over on you.

Also, there is a thread on this forum with many documented cases of this same problem, so I have to believe it is some manufacturing defect.

My local mechanic did all the oil changes. Every 5k miles. I buy the the oil(Mobil 1)/filters(OEM TOYOTA) he does the work. I pay cash.
The dealer said you had free maintenance, how come you didn't bring it in? They said as far as Toyota is concerned, you never did any maintenance unless you produce receipts.
I said I prefer to have some I know working on my truck, with years of experience.
Now I will have to go to each Toyota dealer and ask for an itemized receipt for all the filters I bought. Fortunately I buy my OEM Toyota oil filters by the case. I just don't remember which dealer I bought them from, and my credit card, for which I use for buying oil and filters, is not itemized. It will just "Autozone"(for the oil) or "Toyota Dealer X"(for the filters.)
So if you do your own maintenance, beware! This is what Toyota is saying, or at least the dealer I went to. KEEP ALL YOUR RECEIPTS!

    No sir, nothing left out.

Bought this truck while it was still on the boat. Thousands over retail.

The dealer may be trying to pork I think, because when the rep I was dealing with turned white as a sheet and got all jittery and started shaking when the tech told what was wrong with my truck. My service rep then escorted my over to the service dept. manger for a "meeting" to explain the predicament I was in, the manager said, not my decision, it's Toyota's.
I never got angry, mad, or lost my cool, because I know the maintenance was done, my truck is squeaky clean, no 4 wheeling(sorry, but those days are over).
This truck works, pulls my boat, my trailer full of dirt bikes, a dirt road or two to get to the hunting spot, or get me home from snowboarding if I get caught in a snowstorm, in comfort!
This no there there.KDX hauler 2.jpg
If a slice of bologna slipped out of your Wonder bread and landed French's mustard side up in my truck, you would eat it.

Sounds like a shitty service manager.

Easy fix, have your friend the mechanic write up the oil change/service invoices if you didnt keep them. I would also try getting a 2nd opinion from a different dealer.

You drove it in there didn't you? Did you give them authorization to tear down the engine? That's pretty shitty. You take a truck that should still be under warranty, in there for a problem that is obviously a manufacturing defect. Truck is squeaky clean which should be a strong indication that it is well maintained. Now they want to hold the truck (and you) hostage to get you to pay for repairs. Get your friend to write up receipts like someone else suggested. I would go in there and see if they did anything that would make the truck not drivable and if it is drivable take it the hell out of there and go to another dealer.

I think the service manager is an idiot and trying to hold your truck hostage. As others have advised, document the maintenance and seek another dealership.

They have begun to tear the engine down today, prior to me signing any agreement.
That said, after supplying them with receipts for the maintenance, they gave me the impression that is will be covered by my warranty.
They gave a truck a close scrutiny and were impressed how clean it was. Inside(the engine) and out.
I told them I am a stickler about maintenance. When I told all my friends that the dealer was doubting whether or not the maintenance was being done the all laughed.
All my vehicles are VERY well cared for.
This truck doubles as my mobile office, so I like to keep it very clean.

Best of luck to you. I would spend a little time discussing your overall experience with Toyota Corp.and the owner of the dealership. The service manager seems like he thinks "service" is like a bull "servicing" a cow, rather than caring for the dealerships customers in a professional and thoughtful manner. First he has fed you bull shit then he has bulled his way under your hood by performing unauthorized work.

I would contact the investigative team at the local news station to see if they can run a story on the dealership. Maybe let the GM know that is your next step.

Why is everyone is so quick to make it personal when the dealership denies a warranty repair?

The dealership has to kick some maintenance receipts upstairs to corporate so it will get covered. OP provided some receipts, now its getting covered. What's the big deal?

The dealership isn't going to fix it for free, that's not their job. If they can't get reimbursement from corporate they won't touch it. Corporate wants to see proof of maintenance. That's how it works

Just throwing this out there, I used my Toyota care (2 oil changes at 10k each) and did my own inbetween, now that's over the sticker states 5k or 6 months, just saying.

If your dealer gave you 5 year warranty, then you can take it back and have them troubleshoot then fix whatever it is.

If not have a warranty, find a local shop.

Sounds like even if toyota doesn't approve the warranty you're not paying for it.

My annoyance was it didn't seem like they kicked it up to corporate at all. Lots of places have crappy service if you didn't buy the car from them.

Them starting to fix it before he came back with receipts or signed anything tells me they didn't and tried to see if he would pay.
