you ever tow anything with a 4banger?

4 banger still a 4 banger even if it has a turbo

Are you saying it’s better to tow with the current V6 that has peak torque at 4600rpm vs a turbo 4 that has 30% more torque at 2000rpm?

Sorry, no. A 4-cylinder with gobs of low RPM torque will easily out tow a high RPM V6 like the 3.5 in our Tacomas.

The 2.7 in the GM twin makes 350 lb-ft at 1,500 rpm. The 3.5 produces 265 at 4,500. Which would I prefer, hmmmm.

No doubt the I4 beats the V6 with a stock tune. However, low end torque and towing characteristics of the 3.5l V6 can be significantly enhanced by an appropriate tune.

Having owned a number of forced induction vehicles including two current turbo's, one diesel and one gas, the issue is when the engine is nearly always in boost to produce the required torque/hp to accelerate, maintain speed, or overcome a grade. A small displacement engine with forced induction can product impressive numbers but isn't happy and doesn't last as long or return good MPG when it is in heavy boost frequently or for long a duration. Compounding this is that off boost these motors are have less power than a naturally aspirated engine of the same number of cylinders and displacement necessitating boost to even produce slight power such as maintaining freeway speeds with a load, headwind, slight incline.

Edit: For a most owners that commute and haul bicycles and skis (like me) a turbo four may be an enjoyable experience. For the fully loaded broverlander, or an RV hauler or heavy off-roader time will tell.

I was thinking that Avalanche Grey color ford has. Looks between white and Cement IMO.

I can confirm the 3.5 is a pain in the ass to drive at higher elevations here in the mountains of Colorado. I have spent a lot of time with it in so cal at sea level and the engine is great. It can maintain highway speeds at lower rpm and has a lot more power at 1000-2000 rpm. Up here in Colorado it’s a different story. Combine that with the steep grades and you have an engine that needs to constantly downshift to maintain speed and keep the engine above 3000 rpm. I would love a turbo hybrid for the driving conditions in Colorado.

I'm not sure where you're getting your information from, but it is patently incorrect.

The limited times I have towed on the highway with the current v6 was fairly miserable. Really need to get the engine above 3k rpm for a majority of the drive to maintain speeds, especially if there is any headwind or slight grades. When the 3.5 is that strained mpg is pretty abysmal. Think I averaged 12 mpg, even then I had to keep it under 70. I can see how a turbo boosted 4 with a hybrid motor giving 50-100 torque at o rpm would be much better and could give better fuel economy. The 3.4, 4.0 and 3.5 were all pretty mediocre engines for towing anyway. Turbo engines are also built with stronger internal components to handle higher boost and than a comparable NA engines so I don’t think durability would be a major concern.

I'm pre ordering the next Land Cruiser. What ever it may end up being.

I can't recall ever seeing a 3rd gen pulling any trailer other than maybe a small utility at the dump. I know people do tow with the 3rd gen.

Totally irrelevant I saw LR Discovery with tow mirrors today, which reminds me. I saw a clean Cement OR DCSB 18or19 looked like a manual the way it was being driven could of had a lift or leveled on OEM steel 5spoke wheels with Michelin radials or maybe winter tires, but they looked more like radials. Like I said it was clean, and looked really good on the steel wheels.

I can see why. Anything over 3000 pounds is pretty rough. That being said there is a member on here with over 315,000 miles on his third gen that constantly towed a heavy loaded trailer. Gives me hope my engine will last a long time given I hardly ever drive under heavy load.

But would you agree that no amount of tune will replicate torque figures at 1,500-3,500 of a turbo 4? I will say under load a turbo 4 won’t net better fuel mileage towing. Empty I believe otherwise.
