99TacoDriver, I would recommend reading some reviews on the Ford Ranger's powertrain, which receives praise compared to the Tacoma's 3.5L. Add in a Ford approved reflash, to address JWestie's comment, and the gap will be even larger.

Count me in the camp that would take a risk on a first year 2.4T Tacoma vs. buying a 3rd Gen, just for the power delivery of the new engine.

Did he offer to save it, just for you, if you gave him $500 down?

Yea I ordered it. He said he’s gonna throw in a Toyota hat and key chain. That pretty much sealed the deal!

I would prefer neither. I’ll stick with my 4.0 or buy a full-size truck with a bigger engine. Towing with a 4 cylinder seems silly.

And the 2.4T with a tune will be a level above all of them.

It might seem silly, but on high output 4cyl turbos, it’s .. fine.

probably been discussed in the thread before but is the consensus that the manual transmission will die with the 3rd gen?

there’s the emissions/MPG regulations, plus have they even developed an MT to pair with TNGA/Dynamic Force engines…? I guess the new Corolla has one but not sure that’s adaptable for truck platforms. I guess I’m asking if there has been any credible rumors or reasons to think there’ll be a 4th gen with MT, because in my mind the default assumption would be that it’s gone

No consensus. I suspect you’ll see the 2GR-FKS and the RA62F carry over, but I might be crazy.

Pulling a boat up a steep and slippery boat launch and having to rev the engine high enough to build boost? No thanks.

Toyota is the biggest shareholder in Aisin (who make the 6-MT for the Wrangler/Gladiator) AND they sell more MT Tacomas than all Sequoias combined…so a bit of clever engineering could keep the 3-pedal dream alive. Fingers crossed….

Modern turbos don’t have any lag. They are designed to spool up at very low RPM. You’re thinking OG stuff like supra and rx-7 turbos from the 90’s.

The Ranger 2.3T makes 310 ft-lbt @ 3000 rpm compared to 265 ft-lb @ 4600 rpm for the Tacoma 3.5. It makes more torque than the Tacoma's peak at 2000 rpm.

that’s cool and all but I can almost guarantee Toyota won’t send out a factory tune.
