There’s still a rotor attached to that wheel. I don’t believe lug nuts were to blame here. There is video of the wheel in slow motion.

The safety of our customers is always our first consideration. That is why we have such strict assembly installation guidelines. But when the whole front hub assembly falls off, it doesn't matter how tight the lugs are.

From the news reports, everyone came out relatively unharmed which is great to hear.

I do have a question, out of curiosity.
How many customers come back after the 25-50 miles and actually have you recheck the lug nuts?
I have free lifetime rotations on my tires, and just recently they have started having me initial an agreement to come back an have the lugs rechecked.
Do I? No, because I have a torque wrench.

But percentage wise, how many come back?
My guess is less than 20%?

@TnShooter we recommend customers return for initial retorque only when brand new wheels are installed. No more than 50 miles is recommended to have them retorqued. We do not require a retorque on factory wheels after a rotation or flat repair service.

Yeah, my wheels are stock. Been on for 160k miles.
Just figured it was for liability reasons.
No big deal. Just more paperwork.

    Thanks for the replay.

    Yeah, I know that.
But I keep seeing “lug nuts” being thrown around as the cause.
In this case, it look like the lugs were not the issue.

I’d say there was a noise, and the noise was probably ignored for awhile.
Hubs don’t typically come apart like that with out warning,.

The big shiny thing on the other side of the wheel is the rotor.
