I was lumping in the 4.0 forgot all about those with the PD vehicle reference, I'd imagine that any of the later vehicles would have the 3.6

No money, all went to truck...

I recently rented a 2022 Chrysler Pacifica with the 3.6 pentastar motor. I can't speak to its reliability or lifespan but that motor is pretty sweet to drive. 7 people in the van, loaded with gear, that van moved! I was impressed.

60K miles without issue is nothing to be proud about. Every modern vehicle should do much more than that. Unfortunately many people have problems with the pentastar well before that 60K. It’s well documented.

I’m not going to anything seriously from the guy that pretended turbos are bad for truck applications.

Do all the turbocharged Toyota engines that might be in the next Tacoma require premium gas?

No idea, it's most likely not required but premium probably provides better results. Whether or not premium is any different than regular that's debatable.

It's a lot more expensive over the life of the vehicle to have to fill it with premium (currently $5.19 per gallon where I live, compared to $4.61 for regular 87 octane).
I think usually turbocharged engines are higher compression, often 12:1 or higher, and premium is required.

I went back and forth with my ecoboost but stayed with the premium. It's not ethanol free so, I doubt if it's doing much in the long run, main reason I went to regular it wasn't quality fuel to begin with. Seems to run better with premium.

I believe the ttv6 tundra is tuned to run on 87 octane. The 3.5 is already a fickle beast so I run 87 anyway. My fuel pump chirps if I run 85. I bet we would see the 2.4 take 87.

85? Is that a west coast thing?

The lowest we have around here is 87.

According to carmaker they may carry over the 3.5 for a couple years. No idea if that’s true but would not be surprised. It would satisfy the people that are still afraid of the better newer, more efficient smaller displacement engines. The 2.4l would honestly tow circles around the 4.0 and 3.5 given its numbers. Add a Hybrid motor like the I force max and the v6 looks like a limp noodle. Its only saving grace would be its proven reliability. Ford and Chevy have already proven the performance. Don’t believe me, go test drive a 2.7. It humiliates the 4.0.

I have low hopes for the 2.4, Toyota IMO isn't any good at turbocharged engines.

I tested a Lexus IS300 (2.0 turbo) and it was an embarrassing excuse of an engine. Ended up a couple years later buying my WRX (2.0 turbo boxer), stock for stock will blow the Lexus' doors off at the same curb weight.
Let's not even mention the true competitor to that IS, the base BMW 2.0 punches harder than the IS350.

Towing or any other light duty truck usage. Better torque curve, just like all the new dynamic force engines from Toyota.
