3rd gen insecurity: just do the math

We do know, and it's not an opinion. It is objective fact that Toyotas are among the best vehicles made on this planet.

 

In the 80s and 90s they were. But in 2023, they’re only ranked 8 out of 32 OEMs in reliability according to RepairPal. A lot of that is due to teething issues with their new turbo engines, however.

 

I just got rid of my second post 2016 Toyota vehicle. Something has gone wrong at Toyota.

My 3rd gen was the first strike. The 2020 Corolla was the second.

my wife’s 2015 sienna is still going strong, but that’s the old V6 and the old Toyota still.

I was a loyal Toyota customer for 25 years, but something is off now.

3G Tundra has that shape stamped into the fenders. 4G is going to be the softest Tacoma yet to be produced, with its rear coil suspension and what ever other refinements owners have requested. They seem to be transitioning into Ridgelines.

 

Look at the calendar and thank the mods for injecting some humor into the forum.

 

Leaf springs suck, it will be nice not to have 150 year old technology. Looks like they’ll finally replace the drum brakes as well. Ram changed the game with coils springs. Bout time we got some refinement. It’s still a BOF tuck at the end of the day.

 

Man I must have gotten a real turn, I had to replace my wiper blades after 1 year here in central AZ!! Wth Toyota?!

 

Going on 6 years, and still no issues. Also still waiting for the original Battery to die...

 

I feel like most issues have been in the earlier years of the 3rd gen, I’ve had no issues with my 21 aside from low oil light when on a steep incline that made my heart sink for a second. I got over it when I came down the incline.

 

I'm sure the rear coils will be fine. With Ridgeline and Maverick both having cools Tacoma will become more appealing to people shopping all makes of midsize and compact trucks. No other midsize has rear coils which could sway people either way. If the midsize buyer is more concerned about payload they might go GM or Ford. I find it interesting that Toyota is going to more refinement with suspension engineering. Look how much flack Ridgeline gets for being a soft truck. While at the same time Toyota is employing macho styling on the same trucks. Must be what customers are asking for.

 

Coils can handle payload just fine these days. Better compliance and small bump sensitivity. Our trucks have pretty low payload already. We also get a fully boxed frame this time around instead of our shitty flexy c channel frames. It should have the best ride in the midsize class.

 

Overall I don't find rear leaves to be that bad. Toyota isn't the best example of rear leafs, and I think there will be an improvement with their IRS. Fully boxed frame is a plus.

So true even sucky cars today kick a good 1980s and early 1990s car’s ass; as far as driveability and technology. There were cars from that era that 80 mph was a frightening experience.

 

I was hoping for actual math. Disappointed.
