My 08 Prerunner TRD with 140k is finally acting her age. Rear brakes chirping in reverse, shudder from first to second, are being addressed from TW threads and help a lot.

New no fun problem came on 2 weeks ago....at 2k rpm I have a what sounds like a wind roar from the front of engine. Replaced serpentine, replaced fan clutch, and charged up hearing aids. It has helped very little. I have scoped with my pvc (pipe) and everything I checked is pretty quiet. My V6 now sounds like my GO DEVIL 43 Willy's MB at top end. Any ideas? First thread...hope it's OK.

Is the sound also heard when parked and the engine is revved to 2,000 rpm?
Or is it only when the truck is moving?

When you replaced the belt, did you check the idler pulleys, tensioner pulley, alternator, power steering, AC? With that many miles, it’s beyond likely that at least one of those has bearings that are on their way out. At 112K, I had two idlers and an alternator that were bad. The alternator let me know in no uncertain terms by freezing up solid, thankfully while parked in my driveway. However, no obvious noise like you’re describing.

First thing that came to mind was the fan clutch, but you’ve already eliminated that as the source. This one will be interesting to figure out.

It can be heard running in the garage as wifey was the throttle operator for me. The sound is more evident in the cab while driving.

Of note...the "roar" as I call it is coming from the serpentine area, I did the 12 qt (4x3 ) drain/fill with WS and added the Lubeguard a couple of weeks before the roar showed up. I have a first to second shimmy I'm working on. Not jumping my own post, just full disclosure.

I don't know as yet how to answer
Individual posts yet, duh me, but Leo to your points; that is exactly why I changed the belt. I spun and handed them all and I ended up the bearings are still solid. Yes, I think I'm wrong as well. Installed
The belt and my pvc stethoscope showed zip.

Im going to take belt off and start
the truck in the garage just to hear or not to hear the roar, to see if I'm hunting in the right forest.

Thanks for the posts, my first Taco. The roar sound is pretty throaty, low frequency, ie, power
    steering or water pump sounds???

Did it happen right after you replaced the fan clutch? I replaced the worn out fan clutch on my 02 with a “towing package” clutch and it sounded like a hurricane under the hood, especially at high rpm

Ha....I understand your pain, new noise bad. The serpentine and fan clutch went in same day. The noise went to about half.

What did happen is the noise is now starting up at around 1k rpm. Something wearing out soon??!?

Bought a stethoscope at HF...PS pump maybe first thing I replace. I'll let you know.

It’s the blue words in the bottom right of individual posts. Like & quote after you click on you’ll figure out. Multi-quote, hi light like you’re gonna copy & paste, but instead click on multi-quote pop up.

I’ve had good luck using a Long screwdriver in my hand and against whatever I suspect is making noise. Then I can sorta feel the vibration making the noise.

My guess is it’s something the belt touches. Take the belt off and give every pulley a spin. All of them including the tensioner and idler. I’ll bet one doesn’t feel right.
