I am looking at a TRD OR DC SB, in the brochure features list it says :

gray grill with smoked finish, color keyed heat power outside mirrors with turn signal indicators, color keyed door handles, black overfenders and CHROME rear bumper….

Chrome rear bumper really? But it is color keyed on the TRD sport model.

Salesperson says you have to get the technology pkg (which is ok with me) to get the color keyed rear bumper on the TRD off road. I did not see that option in the brochure, just the advanced tech group pkg.

I haven’t seen a chrome bumper on any of the TRDs off road that I have seen on the road, is this a real thing?

Yes. That's the whole reason I got the tech package. I knew I would change everything else so that's the only add-on I got, and for that purpose.

Standard bumperettes are chrome. Tech package is the only way to get them color matched. This also comes with the backup sensors which are actually pretty handy to have offroad.

    Well damn!

so if I can’t find one optioned with the tech package, I should look at the TRD sport, or get those black bumper covers from ET for $156, get used to the chrome (not sure why they do that, there is very little chrome on the truck), or buy and get a new rear bumper (that seems a little excessive on a new truck). Even more excess, have it painted to match maybe?

You can replace them separately if you can't find one with the tech package. The chrome is such an eyesore but it goes well with the rest of the chrome on the truck. You'll have fun removing it all if you hate it as much as the rest of us do.

My truck is a TRD OR base without tech. swapping the bumper covers was easy. I just bought new plastic pieces online, and had them sanded smooth, prep'd, and painted for $200

Black plastic flares too instead of color-keyed.

When you look at the window sticker, you have your Standard Equipment and the then you have the Optional Equipment. Optional overrides the standard, e.g. cloth seats are listed in the standard, but in the premium off-road package (OF) as optional equipment you will find the leather trimmed seats.
Best is to google the packages, because on the window sticker they do not list all the features (e.g. RCTA, BSM for the AT).

I can live with chrome bumper and like the black fender flares.
I guess I could plasti dip the bumper as a trial change.

Still all in my head… but I’m keeping the chrome bumper!
I am maybe one of the only ones that wanted the chrome bumpers. Grew up with a gen 1 and love the old school look. Didn’t need the useless tech, IMO, and just wanted a bone stock ride with the LED headlight package. Every Tacoma looks rad, I’m sure yours will too!

Per @4xThad he and others have installed color-matched bumper covers over the chrome bumpers. They look pretty original in some of the pictures they've posted. You can probably do a search to find them. Just a thought.

You can get covers that go over the chrome. But I actually just replaced the chrome pieces all together. White, black, silver bumper covers are fairly easy to find. My truck is cement and there actually aren’t tons of base cement trucks out there. So finding color matched covers, or even pre painted replacement bumper caps was not easy-hence why I went the paint route

Ah, makes sense. Had chrome on our last Tundra Limited but I like the color matched bumpers on our Tacoma better as well.

yeah dog, I ordered the bumper covers off ebay like 4 days after I got the truck home and dropped them at paint a week or 2 later. It wasnt the first "real mod" but I started making changes the day after I brought the truck home lol

My 2011 regular cab was very basic with a black painted bumper. In some ways that was good. Easy to fix with flat black rattle can
