Beginning to think the same...as the domestics have got. I can't really complain much on past toyota trucks i've owned, just about everyone ran flawless till it was time to send them down the road years later. So far my 2020 is above average from past experience. Can't say the same about a buddies 2019 trd. Best to describe his..its quirky. He's had the same dealership that services mine say all is normal after a through inspection, just what they are. So far there's no major issues with his, but there are some things that are imo annoying.

Mine does it every once in a while, but it feels like a transmission issue to me.

2021 Offroad AT SB bought in June 1600 miles. Shudders when traveling between 42-55 mph in 4th or 5th gear and RPMs below 1500 when continuous light pressure applied to pedal. When RPM is in 1500 or above no issues. I am trying to keep a little heavier foot to keep the RPMs above that super fuel saver type shit toyota must be programming these with. Hopefully I can get it to stay at 1500 with a little more learning. Not as noticable on tank of 93 octane, but switching back to reg today. I wont be keeping this truck past the warranty if this issue continues as torque converter issues will lead to premature transmission failure. Don't mind it all that much I am just going to keep a lead foot and hope it goes away.

Sounds similar as a buddies 2019 tacoma, but will do it at even lower speeds if rpm are below 1500 while in 6th gear. Its been like that for 20k miles. Dealer told him its common on many tacoma v6 auto's.

All these things have been happening to me since I bought my 22 TRD Pro late last year. I thought it was a learning thing with the truck and it would go away, but it still has not to this day. I install my new head unit which has an OBD2 capabilities and displays gauges of the vehicles stats like "load". While watching the gauges it's like other describe around 1200-1600 RPMs in each gear, the engine doesn't want to raise the RPMs smoothly unless you push it more. This of course causes the downshift effect in order to raise the RPMs for the truck to move forward. The load shows easily 80% or more when this happens, each and every time, no matter the gear. I took it to the dealership, and the mechanic did a ride along and was able to notice it. They did "work" on it and it still does the same thing, and the mechanic stated it did that in another comparable Tacoma.

This reminds me of my '73 camaro that had a higher powerband that kicked around 3500. My stall converter didn't match initially and you get the RPMs up there before you felt the power kick in. Getting to the higher RPMs felt sluggish. Swapped the converter to match the powerband engagement point and things were a whole different world.

The other examples of a MT being in too high of a gear, and your need to down shift it, matches the scenario as well. I have a friend that has the same 22 TRD Pro model, and he has no issues like this, which is infuriating that I have this issue. Debating on actually looking into an alternative vehicle since tunes haven't fixed the issue either.

Any updated news or fixes would be so wonderful to hear for this issue everyone is having.

This is what I do... If you give it to much gas it will shift down 2 gears and hop like a bunny!
I've learned to deal with it.
I live in hill country, with curvy roads, I us Smode when it really bothers me.

Guess you are not real familiar with the 6 speed manual. Both 5th and 6th are OD 4th is direct. The 4l has plenty of power to pull it.

Mine does it too. Like clockwork on a section of road on commute home everyday. 40-45mph with my foot lightly on the pedal cruising at about 1200rpm. It just starts shuddering until I either tap the brakes, hit S mode and throw it into 4th, or push the pedal in and rev up to 50mph which isn’t really great for that stretch of road. It sucks and is a bummer to deal with, but for me only does it under pretty specific conditions. My only real problem with it is that it does worry me it will compromise the longevity of the transmission and blow that prematurely. Honestly can’t wait to get out of this truck into something better once I can afford it. 15k miles right now, probably gonna run it right to the end of the power train warranty and dump it off unless Toyota fixes this

Take it to your dealer sounds like a converter lock up clutch issue every thing you said you did has an effect converter clutch they all will unlock the converter.

    A few.
This stutter seems to be an issue across multiple manufacturers possibly due to the 6 speed + auto transmissions being used in recent years. Ive seen a number of people mention a similar complaint on various truck groups. Just saw one on a new 2022+ Tundra group

It's an issue across all manufactures pretty much they all have transmission quirks of some sort. I haven't driven one but many have 10 speed transmission that alone would drive me nuts with all the constant shifting, just makes me enjoy my manual even more.

Zero complaints with the auto in my 2020 sr5. It's the smoothest working automatic transmission I've ever owned vs some I've had. I think it's like anything, you can get a good one or not.

My 2020 OR does this exactly. I agree with the OP that it is VERY annoying. I had the KDMaxx tune done and it is not the perfect solution but it helps quite a bit. I guess I am used to it now. It really is the only issue I have with my truck.

It could be worse, I drove a 2019 Jeep Cherokee for a bit. That POS did this like you would not believe! It was going to get me killed. If you are trying to make a left across a busy road, good luck if you need to gun it! It is like rolling the dice with your life. Maybe it will go? Maybe it will sit and think about going when you are in the middle of the road?

I can say that these trucks dont drive like a regular auto. I dont know what or why maybe its the throttle mapping or whatever but alot of people complain and i can see why. But to be honest just adapting to how it drives is all you need in my opinion, just bump the throttle a bit if you want to get moving a little faster/need a lower gear for a hill. I’ve actually come to prefer how it drives now because on flatter grounds i can more or less feather the throttle while it just lingers at 1000-1500 rpm and then when i want to get moving a little faster just half throttle it from the get go. Idk man just put ur foot down lol (but not flooring it)

I've had this same issue with my 22 TRD Sport 4x4 6spd auto. They're like, oh its in "learning mode." I now have 13,5xx miles on it and it hasn't changed at all. Just something like everyone else says, you just accept it and deal with it.

Consider switching to 91/93 octane for a couple tankfuls. Doing so helps my 2019 with that issue.

I can attest to its “learning” as the truck has gotten better about holding gears on inclines and properly shifting over time but its very subtle so it could be a subjective observation. So many normal people may not notice the change.
