Hey everyone -- Long time lurker, first time poster

I'm looking to start a mobile tech repair business, where I'd be picking up client devices, taking them home for repair (if they can't be done on-site), then arranging delivery.

I'd like to cut the drive back to my home office and instead be able to do repairs on the go. I'm thinking of housing the following in a camper shell, which I would like input for solutioning these 2 things:
    • Workbench + seat
    • Power source for monitor(s), devices ranging from phones to soldering equipment/PC's, etc. (Not the factory bed side plug)
I've looked around quite a bit and haven't seen many bed setups like this, and I would appreciate any and all help!

    Thanks in advance :pccoffee:

Welcome to TW! Although I think building out a work van for this purpose would be the most logical route, I wish you luck! I'd be weary of any of my own personal devices in a camper shell, much less a clients, due to waterproofing issues. That being said, if you were dedicated to sticking with the tacoma platform, I'd opt for a hi-rise type camper shell. Not sure if you've ever tried to sit in the bed of a tacoma in a regular camper shell or not; its not really ideal, and thats before all the add on's you need.

Thanks for the welcome and reply!

A work van would be the more than ideal setup, but I'd probably have to stick to this platform for now, until I can accurately gauge income. Devices would only be transported if the repair is significant but a proper storage solution would alleviate those concerns (i.e. inside the cab, a dedicated Pelican solution if it's in the back, etc.) To your point though, I hadn't considered a hi-rise camper so I could start taking a look there instead. I don't envision sitting criss-cross apple sauce for repairs being fun. Thanks for the advice and for the thread reference!

What about just towing a super compact trailer with you to certain jobs or on specific days? You’re already gonna be in for 3k on a new hi-rise canopy shell you could probably find something like the pic attached for -5k. Then you could house all your tools, equipment, invoices and create a proper desk/repair area. You could paint the outside with your logo/company name and phone number to advertise while you drive.

I don't know how tall you are but you may not have room for your head if you sit in the chair with mini desk in bed shell. Unless you plan to sit on the floor to work on the device repair.

If I were you, get a trailer that has 7' height which it has plenty of room to walk around and sit.

    Something like this:

They have colors you choose one from... Find local trailer dealer in the area. You can tell them the options you want for that specific trailer such as window, RV door with glass, something like that.

Edit: I added "in" in the first paragraph. "... in bed shell"

OP, if a work van is out of the question but you're also not 100% committed to a camper shell, this would be my next best solution. For the price of a camper shell and amount of mods needed to outfit a truck bed to do what you want, this option is way more feasible to reach every one of your goals more easily from a practical standpoint.
