Leaf springs cost less than 5 links and coils. That and compactness (less intrusion into bed space) kept leaf springs in Toyota trucks until now. Similar reasons kept drum brakes in Toyota trucks until now.

You are right about ride and handling being similar. 5 link though does effectively eliminate axle wrap. The 4Runner somehow gets away with a one-piece driveshaft without a double cardan joint, despite having a shorter wheelbase than a Tacoma.

Same! I am still enjoying the "newness" of my '21 3rd gen and hope to be driving it for a very long time. But here I am as well reading every post in this thread for any bits of info/speculation, and can't wait to see what is revealed tomorrow.

Happy Taco Tuesday 4/4 4th Gen Day everyone!

I thought they had drum brakes because they were better for off-roading because sand can’t get in them. :D

Just hoping they don't do away with the DCLB config like GM did with theirs. Also guessing the manual is going to die, but maybe Toyota will surprise me on that one.

Why does TW not have a 4th gen sub forum yet?
    4Runners has a 6th gen for 2025

They're worse for off roading because sand (and mud) does get in them and can't be easily flushed out. Meanwhile I can aim the pressure washer at the front calipers and get them cleaned out reasonably well after each trail ride. Rear discs are easier to maintain as long as Toyota goes away from the in-hat parking brake design.

If it’s anything like other manufacturers preview it will just be another picture of the grill or tail lamps. Then string out pictures for 7 days before announcing that they’ll tell you cab configuration in June. Let’s hope they don’t do that.

Wasn't there at least 3 different leaks months apart with the 3G Tundra?

You missed the memo from Mike Sweers, Toyota engineer?

Wonder if Sweers is the lead engineer on the 4th gen? If so, the drum brakes and seat belt buckle stay!

    Yup he is....faaaaack.

It’ll be great to see an “official” release tomorrow, if that is what happens. I’m sure Gen4 is an excellent truck, and knowing Toyota, even the new-tech items will have designed backups & built-in redundancies to ensure reliability and relative ease of maintenance.

Since we already know it’ll look somewhat like a junior Tundra and share its basic platform & turbo/hybrid philosophy, my guess is fan reaction will be similar to the ‘22 Tundra. The difference is that whereas the Tundra is not a class leading full sizer, a Tundra-ized Tacoma will be enough to lead this recently more competitive but lesser-developed midsize class of trucks and sell 275k+

Probably like a lot of folks, unless this new baby can levitate me over traffic and do my taxes, I am 100% happy sticking w old reliable. But it’s going to be fun to watch the first wave (deposit cash in hand) dive in the deep end of this pool.

Not trying to argue brakes but on my 01 Taco that I had for 18 years, I never needed anything done to the rear drums but minor adjustments in 250,000 miles. Meanwhile, my front brakes needed maintenance every other year it seemed between warped rotors, calipers and brake pads. I understand what your trying to say with sand and mud but for overall maintenance & cost of maintenance, drum brakes win everytime, at least in my experiences:notsure:
And yes I realize a majority of a vehicle's braking comes from the front:D
And yes I am excited to get the rear discs on the next gen, but mainly for the aesthetics. Never once have I been driving and said to myself "I wish I had rear disc brakes"
But when I see newer vehicles with them, I do say to myself "looks good" especially when they are moving and you can see through the wheels:thumbsup:

Sounds like the front brakes was doing all the work. Are the front brakes any larger on the heavier 3rd gen over the 2nd gen? 2nd gen brakes didn't seem that large.
