Hello all, Just purchased a newish 2022 Tacoma Trd Off-road. So far it has 0 mods and the first thing I want to look into is an overland tent. But I’m new to the whole thing so starting off I live in an apartment with no where to actually store it. So it’s going to be on there daily. Where would be the best place to mount it. And what’s are down things I should look into.

It's really going to depend on your needs/uses/preference.

Since it's going to be on there daily, you'll have to be more particular about your placement choice. IE if you ever foresee yourself needing the bed for something that would be taller than the bedsides, a low profile bedrack would not be a good idea. But if not, and you wanted to save money/have a stealth look, you could get some bed height bars and keep it mounted under a softtopper.

Standard places will be above the cab, above a camper shell/cab height bed rack, or on low profile bed rack/bed bars.

Diamondback bed cover and throw a tent on top. Different technique, same result; and if ya can find a Diamondback cover used like I did, it’ll be a shitload cheaper. Also saves your suspension from having to lug around the rack and the tent at all times. Only downside is, people won’t know how cool you are without the rack and tent on all the time. Save that money for a down payment on a house.

And you’re able to just lay down your sleeping bag and sleep on top? No damage to the cover? Damnit but I wanna look cool!

probably not lugging around anythig to high maybe a bike or surfboard from time to time. Right now I’m looking to just be able to find a pretty easy place to get to and set up my tent. How much loss in MPH should I expect?

Looking cool is all relative. In my opinion, the roof top tents are more for people who want to look cool on "the gram". Not really practical to have on your truck 24/7 unless you camp every weekend.

Well so a bike was exactly why I presented that scenario lol but again depending how you plan to put it in the bed, you could need to work around it or not.

If you put the tent on a cab height bedrack or on top of the cab, expect a 2-3MPG hit. If you keep the top of the tent below the roofline, it'll only be 1-2MPG, your driving style will be more impactful tbh, as well as any other future mods involving a lift, larger tires, wheels, etc.

The higher you put the tent, the more of a bear it will be climbing into and out of it, when camping. Not a huge deal except for those late night excursions to the bathroom or otherwise. Also something to consider if you plan to have pets or kids that will be in the tent as well.

Hell no man, I like to be comfortable! I plug in my self-inflatable air mattress into the 3 prong outlet in the bed, throw my pillow and sleeping bag on that and grab my woobie.

Those Diamondback bed covers can hold 400-1600 lbs depending on which one ya get. Presuming you don’t weigh close to 400lbs, you should be good with any of them. I got the HD which holds 1600 because I haul stuff and things from time to time.

EDIT: I’ve had more people compliment my DB cover than anything else so you’ll still look cool…just not internet cool.
