Buy a '23, or wait for a '24?

My mind is spinning, so maybe some input from fellow Tacoma owners can help me sort this out. I've got a '17 SR DCSB 2WD with 29K miles that I bought brand new. After hearing from a few folks that sold their car/truck to Carvana, I was surprised at what they got. For $hits and giggles, I entered my Tacoma into the Carvana web site, and got an eye-opening offer. So, I checked a few local dealers, and it seems things are loosening up a bit price-wise, and the COVID MSRP (or MSRP+) shenanigan's seem to be over.

Essentially, I could sell my '17 SR to Carvana, and buy a brand new SR5 for around $8K more. I figured stepping up from my my SR to an SR5, along with all the safety features and a 6 year newer truck is almost a no-brainer. Well, of course my brain got to thinking.....

Is it worth buying a '23, when in 9 months or so, it's going to be outdated? I have to think moving closer to the release of the '24, they're going to be dealing on '23's, but even then, I don't know that it's worth not waiting. The other side of my brain wonders what's going to happen to the value of my '17 as the '24 model year approaches. The spread could be quite a bit more than the $8K I have in front of me. I just don't know if I'd be shooting myself in the foot by buying what will soon be "outdated".

    Thoughts?

Some people think 1st gens and 2nd gens are outdated. But, both are still selling for top dollar. 3rds will be the same way 10 years after the 4ths have been around.

If the 2024 is truly a 4th gen then it’s a clear choice of what floats your boat the most. Different engine, likely no more leaf springs or drum breaks, yada yada. I don’t like being on the cutting edge and wait for new models to get the kinks out. The first 2 years of 3rd gens had the most issues. That said, Toyota is quality so their issues might still be more dependable than other makes ‘normal’. I’d get the ‘23 personally but certainly understand others that will say to get the ‘24.

    I'd go with a '23.

    I like my tried & true '21.

I just hit 15k miles after a 2k mi spring break road trip...

Like you mentioned, it's a crap shoot. From what I'm seeing in what the 4th gen is going to be/have. I'll be staying in 3rd gen or moving on to a Tundra, or F150. A 4 banger isn't gonna cut it for me. Your 17 probably won't bring as much in 9 months but, whom the heck knows. Plus best to stay away from from first production year. If you go 23 SR5 that should hold value pretty well, I'm guessing. Goodluck whatever you decide.

I am in this same "dilemma" also. I have not been able to find a '23 for the price I am willing to pay so I was trying to convince myself to wait another year. I really do not want to buy a first year truck with so many new designs. At the same time, I refuse to pay the crazy markups, and for all the useless added packages Toyota seems to offer on all of their trucks so finding the right one is REALLY hard.

    $28.4K. I paid $22K for it in '17.

I’m in the market for a 3rd gen and am too waiting to see. I just don’t want a first year model. The cool things are the new power train and I’m excited to see the infotainment system. The not so cool things are the probable price hike and turbo maintenance. That said I’m still leaning on tried and true 3rd gen

    Agreed.

    Same here...2021!

I'm at 19K miles and my 2 year mark is next month.

12 months ago they were offering even more. 100% Carvana is going to go bankrupt at some point. Cash that check immediately if you do it. They’ve been overpaying for cars to get inventory for 3 years. The bottom is going to drop out at some point. I believe they’re losing money on most deals still.

If you stand to make $6.4k profit off a [normally] depreciating asset, then I think you shouldn't buy a 2023 or a 2024.

Sell your '17, buy a beater with a heater, save as much money as possible for a year or two, then drop cash on a '25 or '26.

Ironically, that also crossed my mind....I'm in Florida though, so I'd need beater with working A/C! :D

I want the V6 for towing and reliability so I just put a deposit down on a 2023, All I see is everything moving to turbo4's and I'm not looking for that

At least wait til tomorrow to see what the '24s are
I'd go with '23 until they get the bugs worked out... maybe '25-'26.

On a serious note, you may also want to check with Carmax, KBB, and Echo Park. My Chebby just went to the highest bidder, which was Echo Park. YMMV.

you and others may not like my recommendation but, i suggest you keep what you have unless it is giving you problems or, it does not meet your needs.

your truck has low miles, is paid for, has many years of life left, and you know the history of it.

Personally I would wait till 2026 or so to get a 4th gen.

Although, I am keeping my 2018 for 20+years. Only got 45k miles.

Never buy the first model year of a total redesign. Let other people be the guinea pigs.
