Dobinsons Snorkel

Has anyone ran one? The price is considerably less than damn near everything else on the market but theres so little info on them.

Also, if you do run a snorkel, what else did you attempt to water proof/add water resistance to?

 

I’ve got one and am pleased with the look, fit, and function. I installed it more for to preserve my exposed intake from dust, road grime, and water being sucked in from the wheel.

I don’t think it really water proofs the truck, just moves the intake up. A lot of electronics like the alternator are too low on the truck itself to really make it good for fording.

 

This was my thought as well but I don’t have any experience with them haha. I really wondered if people did it more for the looks or if they went all out and isolated the electronics, which seems impossible on newer vehicles.

 

Definitely hard to water proof newer vehicles.

after taking out my fender liners my intake was sucking in a ton of sand and road grime. Had to replace the filter after a month. Snorkel was the fix

 

That’s what I’ve been worried about too. Mine arnt completely gone but I cut them up pretty good.

 

Get an eBay/Amazon snorkel and upgrade the hardware. That’s all dobinsons is. They don’t even bother to have their brand stamped on it anymore.

 

how was the template to cut the fender on the eBay/Amazon snorkel?

I retrofitted a different Amazon snorkel on a GX so the template was moot. For $99 at the time it was worth a try for a snorkel that ARB was still charging 300+ for and off brands listing at ~200-250. Snorkel quality was high, molding was great. Included hardware looked fine but I replace with 316 stainless. Sold it with the vehicle and looked essentially brand new. My biggest concern was potential UV degradation or material turning brittle, but I experienced none of that. I’m just not convinced that the additional cost for an essentially ARB clone is worth it, but it may be worth it to people looking for a warranty or install support. Ymmv.

Somewhat related to your question (waterproofing) - in a recent trip (with my USA Tacoma) to Morocco, British guys installed a Donaldson pre-filter on top of their snorkel. It uses cyclonic air movement to spin dust out of the airflow - a method used by Army tanks, heavy off-road equipment, Dyson vacuums. But those vehicles were Hilux turbo-diesels. I would not install such a filter on a naturally aspirated vehicle like ours, as it will create way to much air restriction (plus gasoline engines have low airflow at low speeds, while diesels, lacking a throttle, have as much airflow as the turbos pump through - low airflow speed = no pre-filtration).

But may be useful on a gen 4 iForceMAX!

Kinda wondering how come NOBODY talks about awful noise it makes at approx 4000 RPM under load. Holy crap!!! I mean, it can't be just my set up...

It's just your setup. Get a precleaner, sounds like a turbo.

yeah, didn't expect that at all.
Found a thread somewhere else (maybe Ih8t mud , or something), where dude wit a turbo LC is saying that it has something to do with the space (chamber?) in front of inlet tube. Air gets trapped, makes horrible sound, etc. He fixed it using expandable foam. IDK... was just wondering how come nobody talks about it, and if that was a normal phenomenon
