I’ve sold 3 of my third gens privately after dealer quoted much lower.
I never had them listed more than a week.

Totally understand that but i am not willing to wait when selling privately compared to a trade in where i can get a another vehicle right away.

get different quotes and go with the highest to use while negotiating. Otherwise you can sell your truck to the highest offer. When I sold my 2020 tacoma the highest offer I got was 39,600 with carbuyerusa, givemethevin was the second. The other offers were too low to even bother. (carmax, carvana, driveway, local dealers).

Only advantage to weight on trading it in to the dealer is the sales tax advantage.

So many variables on what a trade is worth. Model, options, mileage, condition, and what your trading it in on. Does your state have tax break, as in only pay sales taxes on difference. Like here in WI if trade is worth $40k, and new is $50k. We only pay taxes on $10k

I've never found that to be true. The way taxes work I have to sell for 10% more than the trade offer just to break even. If I can get 20% more I MIGHT see $1000 more in my pocket. I've never seen anyone actually get 20% more than the trade offer on a vehicle priced in 5 figures. On some beaters that are worth $3K to $5K, maybe. But then you're only looking at $100-$200 more in your pocket.

And that only works if you can sell it quickly. If it takes 2-3 weeks or more to sell then you're paying taxes, and insurance on 2 while you wait to sell the old vehicle.

    If I buy a $40K truck I pay taxes on $40K.

If I get $25K in trade I only pay tax on $15K.

I would guess that any mods you installed that you do not want to keep (skid can be transferred to new, bed mat can be transferred, etc) will be $0 to trade-in but private buyers will give them more consideration.

When trading in a vehicle you are paying for the convenience of getting another vehicle "right away".

I'd at least get quotes from sources other than the dealership. Used prices are high right now, I'd check around before trading it in.

Another good reason to get some quotes is you can negotiate your trade value. Use the quotes as guide to see if the dealer is at least in a decent ballpark with their value. Plus, can tell them you're "shopping other offers" in regards to your trade. Give them incentive to bump up their offer.
