Don’t trade your Tacoma for a Ranger like I did!

I had a 2019 Tacoma that I loved and like an idiot I traded it for a 2020 ranger Tremor. I’m pleased to say that I am back in a new 23 Tacoma and I’m keeping this one forever! My ranger had major issues with fuel dilution in the oil and Ford refused to fix it so I decided to go back to Toyota! I also had to have an axle seal replaced at 2k miles.

My 2019 was Magnetic Grey and my new one is white! I can’t wait to start building it like my old one!

If anyone is considering a ranger stick with Toyota! Trust me

That MGM was real nice. Why'd you trade for the Ford?

Well, it started with that case of Jack Daniels, then the Jose Quervo, ... then *maybe* there was some Absinthe, but I cannot quite remember ...

When I bought my Taco in October I remember being SO torn between a TRD Off-Road or a Ranger XLT Tremor . They are comparable in price, and the ranger beats the taco in Torque, Payload, Towing, and more... but I just couldn't pass up the looks and reliability of the Taco. Looking back I realized I dodged a serious bullet and I'm glad I didn't end up in a Ranger.

Ford dealer getting a 2019 Tacoma on trade was probably Happy.

Toyota dealer getting 2020 Ranger on trade was probably Sad.

    OP, welcome back.

I'm sorry you had a bad experience with the Ranger. My brother has had a 2020 Ranger since late 2019. It's been perfect for him. Next door neighbor is extremely happy with his 2020 as well.

Why choose Ranger over Tacoma? Some real-world specs., not just what is listed on charts.

My brothers 4X4 crew cab Ranger tows 7500 lbs and has over 1500 lbs payload vs 6400 lbs towing and 900-1100 lbs payload on a comparably equipped Tacoma. I wouldn't want to pull 7000+ lbs with either truck, but Ranger has the payload to easily handle 5000+ much better than Tacoma.

Fords using the same 10 speed transmission in Ranger, Explorer, and F150. It is a good transmission.

Ford's 2.3L turbo charged engine is much more powerful with better low-end torque for towing/hauling. Gets better fuel mileage too. While I've not driven my brothers Ranger much I have the same engine/transmission in my 2020 Explorer.

I currently have a 2007 Tacoma with 240,000 miles and a 2014 F150 with 130,000 miles. I'm going to buy another truck in about 2, maybe 3 years. If I were buying today, I'd choose Ranger. I like a lot about Tacoma, but I'm not willing to deal with the anemic 3.5L engine and current Tacoma transmission. I may just decide to re-build my 07 and keep driving it for another 15 years. But I'm waiting to see what Toyota does with the 4th gen trucks.

I agree that overall the ranger platform is certainly more capable than the Tacoma, even considering Toyota’s history of being conservative. The 2.3’s are peppy and downright fast when tuned but as op mentioned fuel dilution issues which is a precursor to oil control ring issues further down the road, especially when run out for long oci’s or idled alot. What I will disagree about is the 10r80 being great, the shop I work at part time has dozens of f150s on the road and there are inevitably atleast one or two service chits a week about poor shifting behavior, hanging in gear or banging while down shifting. Multiple trucks have had replacement transmissions swapped in after exhausting all of fords “fixes” (pcm flash and valve body replacement). That being said the 10r140 seems to demonstrate the same odd shift logic without as many physical failures.
