Hello my tacoma friends, I have messed up royally and could use some advise, here is my situation:
    My Truck:
    • 2008 black Tacoma, access cab
    • 99,500 miles, great condition
    • 5 speed manual, 4wd
Last sunday I hit ice and rolled my truck, the frame and engine are ok, the truck still drives, but the cab is dented in and the windshield shattered. the doors still open, but are damaged.
I thought my comprehensive insurance would cover me, but I come to find out that it doesn't include collision. I had to pay for the tow out of pocket, and got it off of the lot to my house so I wouldn't be charged for more days at the tow shop.
Any advice on what I should do? any tips on selling parts or frames? or if it is worth trying to fix the cab? I am at a huge loss here, and figured I would reach out to the experts to see if anyone had some ideas.

    so bummed, i messed up.

    thanks all

On the plus side, it's great to hear you are still here with us and are well.

On the other hand, how does one not fully cover their vehicle?

Thanks for changing the thread title.

    You basically have three options.

    Part it out
    Fix it
    Sell it as is

Parting out piece by piece takes a lot of commitment, time and effort on your part. Also you need to be mechanical enough to disassemble it yourself plus have the space and tools to do it. Figure on at least 6-12 months before you have made enough to match what insurance may have paid out.

If you want to fix it, you need to decide what you're willing to live with. Right off the bat you'll need to get a windshield and have the roof repaired plus mirrors and at least a few other body panels, then you'll be drivable while you work on making it pretty again. Like someone else said, if you can find a donor with a bad frame and good cab or a blown motor, you might be able to buy it and combine the two into a good vehicle, again assuming you have the skills/time/space (or money) to combine the two vehicles. Plus side to this is you end up with lots of spares or extra parts to sell and recoup some cost.

Third option is the fastest and least effort on your part but probably yields you the lowest return, sell it off to someone looking for a project and buy something else.

So do you have full coverage insurance? If so then collision should cover it. More than likely it’s totaled of course.

Sounds like he has liability since he just 'found out' they're not covering collision.

I've made this PSA before but I'll do it again; IF YOU ARE PAYING FOR SOMETHING, GET YOUR COVERAGE AND/OR SERVICES DOCUMENTED.

KNOW WHAT YOU ARE PAYING FOR.

Yeah, safe to say I learned my lesson… and like I said.. I messed up big time. I assumed my comprehensive insurance covered collision, and I was wrong and found out the hard way.. I posted because I am trying to figure out where to go from here and thought this could be a helpful platform

Meant it as an announcement to others; no need to pour salt on the wound.

I do hope you find resolution to all this but looking at it your truck, a new/used door and windshield will get you mostly there.

Yep; Comprehensive insurance is a coverage that helps pay to replace or repair your vehicle if it's stolen or damaged in an incident that's not a collision.

That said, OP, too bad that you didn't get clipped by a hit & run driver that then caused your rollover.

Unfortunately OP that truck is gone unless you plan on fixing correctly. You’ll need at least doors, a cab , windshield. You’ll spend more than the truck is worth unfortunately or at minimum what it’s worth to fix it. Sorry for your misfortune.

That A-pillar on the drivers side is shot. I dont think you would find anyone to repair that, and if you did I wouldn't trust it. Im surprised the door still works.

If the frame and drive line are actually good (maybe take it to body shop and see if they would confirm that?) Id bet you could find a parts truck with a decent cab if you are willing to spend some time looking

How much money do you have for a new/used vehicle? Address your immediate needs first, transportation to/from your job. Then figure the rest out later.

I am able to bike to work, but the financial situation is bleak for the time being. I am full time employed and looking for side gigs, I just live in an expensive state:/
I will figure alternate transportation in the meantime while I figure out the truck, not willing to get rid of it just yet!

unless you have the ability or means to fix it, the truck is just going to sit there and rot away. Get a tarp over it to atleast save some interior parts. You can buy another truck when your financially able. Unless you need a truck getting a small commuter car will put you in a better financial situation while you save back up for a truck .

i drove a bull$it subaru impreza NA for 5 years. It wasnt my type of vehicle that fit me or my lifestyle but i didnt have the luxury of buying a truck at that point in my life. Dont make yourself truck poor, swallow your pride and make good decisions for your future.

Sorry to see this. If this were just a shits and giggles truck, I’d go full-blown off-road rock crawler. But seeing that appears to not be the case, I think the suggestions of selling and writing off the loss is your smart play. I’m sure not what the heart wants but you’ll have future opportunities to buy again.
