I was wondering if anyone knows why the hill start assist on the TRD Off-Road doesn't instantly come on? Hill start assist is one of the great features on an off road vehicle so when you stop going up a steep slippery surface the vehicle won't roll back and cause slippage that could send you sliding backwards and have to make another run at it. I tried it out the other day and was like whuuut... For some crazy reason the H.S.A. doesn't come on until the truck rolls back about 6-12 inches then it harshly locks up the brakes causing the truck to jerk like crazy. It is extremely counterproductive. Does everyone's H.S.A not kick in instantly like it does on any other vehicle?

I have 22 TRD OR and it does same thing. Just rolls back and starts clanking at me. I have never let it go to see how far it'll roll back since there's always been a car behind me so I haven't really tested it to see if it catches.

Probably due to the cable actuated parking brake. In the cars I have seen that don't roll back, they engage the electronic parking brake and release it as soon as you hit the gas. The Tacoma has to rely on the ABS actuator, so can't operate the same way.

    Purely guessing though. :notsure:

I thought only the sport had the hill assist, not the sport or the pros. Manuals and autos are different too.

My 22 has it. Auto here and on a steep hill take your foot off the brake it doesn’t even budge. Holds it for about 4 ish seconds enough to get foot on gas and go.

I have a 21 SR5 and the hill start assist on it works wonderfully. Haven't had a problem with it even once. And it never rolls back, not even a single millimeter.

Has to do with the electronic brake booster the off road uses. The sport uses the vacuum booster that doesn't have the lag. My sport stays put immediately and holds for about 4 seconds or until you touch the throttle. Worst case use your emergency brake to hold it.

this! The Bros and the ORs have the booster. I never seem to have a problem with mine, if I have a really steep sketchy incline or a trailer, I will use the hand brake, but that is good practice anyways.

To call the hill assist in the OR models pure shit is disrespectful to actual shit.

SR5 and it does help a ton when out wheeling. Works very well on steep grades.

I need to start using the hand brake for this. I've always just 2 footed (one on brake, one on gas) when pulling up a boat ramp for example, but I've started to read more and more issues with trucks cutting power and getting the whole "brake override" or whatever the error message is when hitting the gas and brake at the same time. Seems like trying to pull up a boat ramp with a waterlogged boat and no traction could be a recipe for disaster if say my wife were the one pulling the truck out and all power was lost. No offense to her, but she might not know how to react if she lost power steering/brakes.
