I agree for sure, but related to this thread, there is no way at all to do maintnance on your wheel bearings because they are sealed in the Tacoma, when they go out they just go out. Can't grease sealed bearings. But I do agree there is a lot more that can be done that people don't do and just let it go out and replace

I do find it kinda sad that we are seeing guys lose bearings right around the 70,000 mile mark especially since the bearings are a Non Serviceable part so you can't blame it on lack of maintenance.

If Toyota wants to use Non serviceable parts then they should use something that will be able to last a long time into the future, shit it's not like we are buying disposable bic lighters

I hear you I am just pointing out what I think is the reason for using non-serviceable bearings. My other car has solid axle and I just rebuilded axle after 180k of service and bearings still were in good shape. I did rebuild myself but even re greasing them in Toyota service every 5k would cost few hundred bucks . So average Joe would stop doing that right after warranty if he did even in last few K miles at the end of that. You can put probably 30 K before grease is gone from serviceable bearings so 70K with out adding grease is a good run.
When I get to the bearings failure I will look at what can be done.
EDIT: next year I am plannign to take hub out to atleast tighten them out so they dotn get too loose. I dont see that in maintenance tasks but I saw it in FSM

For 3 consective years 2003-06,my local Toyota dealership recommended and repacked the front wheel bearings and replaced grease seals on my 2000 2WD Tacoma.

I now question if that was neccesary .As usual,I was subjected to their " scare THE customer - expect leaking if don't get it done " tactic .

Hmm 2000 had already sealed bearings so I am quite curious how was that possible:notsure:
unless they just charged you but did nothing .

That particular Toyota dealership always has it on their 2000 Tacoma maintenance recommendation list for 30,000 miles service.

They word it " 2 WD front wheel bearing pack " and charge is $129.99

Replaced the front bearings and seals on my 05 DCLB this week end. They had been getting noisier over the last 10k. Total mileage is 64 k. Didn't run into any issues other than needing the old bearings removed and new one installed with a press. One bearing was completely shot and the other was questionable. Found that the cause of the one going south was likely the inner seal closest to the cv joint, it had a small tear in it, allowing water in causing rust inside the bearing area on the steering knuckle.

Here is what it cost me here in Maryland for parts. Had to go to the dealer since the seals and O ring were special order parts and would have taken too long to get here. Was working with a tight schedule.

    From Advance Auto
    Bearing hub assembly - National Hub - ( Moog ) $ 103.99 each

    From Dealership
    Inner seal - Toyota - $25 each
    O ring - Toyota - $ 4.65 each
    Outer seal - Toyota - $ 14.18 each

Pressing the bearings by a local shop - $ 50

Total = roughly $370 Money well spent, the truck is smooth and quiet again.

Went to tire plus today and mechanic said I have bad left front hub bearing. I was having them listen for a click/tick upfront and he herd growl and said it's bearing but couldn't replicate click noise. I have almost 150000 on my 05. Is it possible it's so bad it's making a click now not only growling? Anyone else experience s click from front

Les Schwab is Charging me 338 to replace the front left wheel bearing and perform and alignment... I just came in for an alignment but it couldn't be done without a new bearing, so I decided, phuck it and let them do it. I couldn't do the job for less because I don't have a press..... and I'm feeling lazy today. The Oregon rain has sucked my motivation into the Willamette.

I have the click. Once the wheel bearing goes to shit you will know. Click, howl, locks up and then once it locks up wheel wont turn and if your going 80mph once that happens, that bearing might be the least of your problem.

not off the top of my head. i believe it was sent from toyota of dallas, lemme see if i can find em

frak, not sure, they have a whole lot now, back when i did it the cheapest one was like 100 bucks plus shipping. skf is a good brand, so is timken. i would order off ebay if they have warranties. i work at autozone and the bearings for our trucks are like `150 and not all stores will have them in stock. besides, thats not something you have to replace often, and it doesn't take long to do it either.

    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/New-...ptZMotorsQ5fCarQ5fTruckQ5fPartsQ5fAccessories

80 bucks for wheel bearings aint bad at all. 1yr warr is also what we have at autozone. kinda wish i would have gotten them for that price :(

you know what i also look at is the seller rating. i would actually go with those guys. they have a 100% rating, so you know at least they'll fix something if they screw up. always ALWAYS look at seller ratings, it's imperative, i usually snoop a year back on a seller before i buy. looks good to me. i would buy and not look back. oh and your truck will thank you too :)

If you have the right tools, it would take about three hrs. make sure to have a 36mm socket for the spindle nut and some mahsuls for taking it off. The Local machine shop charged me 30 bucks to pass on the new bearing, and an hour wait. It doesn't take long. If you take both bearings to be passed in, I'm sure they would be able todo both in an hour.
