Okay so Toyota's implementation of their ETCS-i Electronic Throttle is something I've been able to find limited info on. I understand that certain 2003 and 2004 trucks utilized it. I bring it up because I've been doing a lot of research on the 4WD PreRunner conversions and 2003/2004 trucks have had a lot of trouble on the matter.

    My questions are:

    • Did all 2004 trucks (including 5-lugs, PreRunners, and 4x4's) use ETCS-i? Including the 2RZ/3RZ/5VZ? Or is this just limited to the 5VZ?
    • Certain 2003 models allegedly used ETCS-i. What truck variations did?
    • Did all 2003/2004 transmissions use ETCS-i? Including, but not limited to: the A340E/A340F/R140
    • Can you convert a non-ETCS-i truck to use an electronic throttle?

    • Yes all 2004 trucks with the V6-5VZ had ECTS-I. No 4cyl before 2005 had it.

    • Certain 2003 models allegedly used ETCS-i. What truck variations did?
    • In 2002 there were some v6's that had it. 2003 It's rare to find one without it. A unicorn...? I've never seen one.

    • Did all 2003/2004 transmissions use ETCS-i? Including, but not limited to: the A340E/A340F/R140
    • From what I know yes.

    • Can you convert a non-ETCS-i truck to use an electronic throttle?
    • Yes, but why would you want to? You'd have to change a lot of components to make it work.

Jon to the rescue as always, this is great info I'll make sure to include it when I do a write-up on my 4WD swap.

One more thing, what's the difference between the R150F and the W59 manual transmissions? I see most 6-lug 4WD's use both of them, but the R150F is rarer. My theory was that the R150F is for pushbutton 4WD and the W59 is for J-Shift. I've also never seen a 5-lug with an R150F, only the W59 even though W59 is used on both.

I have a wrecked 1997 4wd and a good 2003 Prerunner. Thinking to convert the Prerunner to 4wd. What if I change everything, engine, ecu, and transmission from 1997 tacoma with cable control into the 2003 Prerunner. ? This should eliminate the ETCS-i system, right?

thats a good questions and im curious to know as well. I would assume you should be able to do it since its a straight up swap with all the parts needed. Ive read of people swapping out the valve body to make it work. Hope someone can answer this question

I have been waiting to see if anyone else could give some more input, but nothing yet. The 1997 Tacoma is 4x4 and has the 3.4 V6, A340F transmission with cable kick down, while the 2003 has a 3.4 V6, A340E with electronic control. I have seen other threads that talk about swapping the valve body, but nothing really clear on how this would work. If I change everything, I am concerned about interfacing the ECU with interior controls and indicators, cruise control, ABS, and the like. Does anyone have some additional thoughts or input?

Most state emissions requirements won't let you go back in years when upgrading fuel system. Only year of vehicle or newer fuel control systems.

You would lose cruise control. You'd have to completely change over the electrical system including computer. Trans would have to be a cable type kick down system. If trans is one with out cable then valvebody in trans would have to be switched to a cable type. Throttle body would haveve to be changed to older design. Should bolt right up.
