Paul (@PNWTacoma) from PNW Tuning installed the Light/Mild OTT tune on ours. It's an order of magnitude better than stock. Night and day. Using the ECT makes it jump like a rabbit out of the hole or whenever I need a little extra oomph to pass or just get moving quickly. If you're doing more performance or specialized kind of driving the "higher" settings like Spicy, etc. may be what you're looking for, but for a daily driver the initial settings were excellent for me. I believe changing the settings and/or updating them are part of the package as long as you own the truck, so you can always get it tweaked later on.

I noticed a big difference right away including immediate throttle response and no more "gear hunting" (that was huge for me). It's actually gotten even better over time. You'll be glad you did it. Best money I've spent on our Tacoma to date.

There's no electronically controlled transmission (ECT) for a manual transmission, correct?

Sorry, should have read the post more closely... manual transmission. D'oh! :boom:In any case, I'm certain he'll notice a BIG improvement. ;)

Ok cool. So i guess i'll start off with "mild" throttle response, go for a test drive, and see how it feels. Since the tuning is happening at a meet, i'll see if I can get it changed then and there, if I need to lower the throttle response. Going to assume it wont be a problem.

I had some driveability issues on the mild throttle and ended up getting upgraded to spicy. Notes are earlier in this thread.

Thank you for the heads up. I'll go the route of starting with spicy then adjusting down if needed.

I tend to not rev out the engine when engaging the clutch so I do get some lurching. Unless i'm driving this thing all wrong. Seen some mention of an improvement with lurching at low rpms with the tune.

I was asked a question in another thread about the differences between the tunes as I have experience with both and wanted to put it up my answer here in case anyone was in the same scenario as me.

I thought the KDmax was amazing, the truck felt quicker, lighter, just better all around. There were times when it would still gear hunt or the pedal was just a tad dead in between press/release and then quickly press scenario. Still way better than stock. I spent a good amount of time on the highest KDmax throttle settling and enjoyed the driving experience over stock. Also put it on the dyno after the KDmax tune. I never made a video or really put the numbers up any where because they were pretty sad. I do have the sheets where I tested the KDmax and the HPS tube and I'm pretty sure I saved the videos on an external SSD. I'll have to look for the videos to be sure.

How I ended up with the OTT. My battery kept dying or getting real close to dying so I picked up a newer AGM bat. AGM bats need a higher output from our alternators, so an update or a new tune was in order. The next day in the AM I saw a post on FB that OTT was going to be somewhat close to me, so I set up an appt that morning. It was way closer than the KDmax tuner.

As for the OTT, the truck feels even lighter, quicker, faster. My RPMs are lower through out all the gears. I can hang in the 80 -90 mphs and it feels like a regular car, even though I do not do this much. I feel like there is more power at a lower RPM and my exhaust even sounds better. I have no gear hunting at all on the highway and the gear shifts are crispy and quick. There is one spot where it hangs just a little between 3rd and 4th. OTT also has dyno sheets to show numbers. I know anything can be faked. I plan to put it back on the dyno to compare when I have time. It just seems to me that the OTT is more robust and better thought out beginning to end.

To make it extremely clear, I am not sponsored by OTT nor did I get a discount for my tune. I already had my computer unlocked so I paid the unlocked full price for the tune.

I'm not here trying to bash anyone. Having been through both tunes, the OTT is a superior tune in my opinion, it's the next evolution for our trucks. I'm on the medium spicy throttle daily with the ability to go full spice once the ECT button is pressed. Loving is so far.

A good way to sum up your post is to echo what I've heard about the OTT vs KDMax: OTT just has more tuning "experience" overall and I think it ends up with a more refined product because of it. It's not to say KDMax won't end up neck and neck with OTT eventually, but the efforts that have been put into OTT seems to produce a better product in the end.

I think had I ended up with KDMax because I couldn't get an OTT tune, I would not be disappointed but I believe I'm happier for getting the OTT at the end of the day.

You're welcome. I am also easy on the throttle during shifts and with the mild setting, the truck often lurched and bucked. It was especially easily induced with the AC running. Upgrading it to spicy solved that problem.

    Good luck with the tune!

Thanks for this writeup. I'm currently running the KD Max Pro tune and its such an improvement over stock my mind is having a hard time comprehending how it could get better. My local tuner switched from KD Max to OTT and swears its a major improvement. Again I'm on fence but I may just have to pull the trigger and find out for myself.

I couldn’t find one. I ended up getting getting my tune done while on a road trip out west. luckily Q was able to fit me in the day we were driving through Southern California.

The drive back home was so much fun. Improved MPG, no gear hunting(even in the mountain passes), and the throttle response was everything I hoped it would be. It’s a night and day difference for sure.

Oh I had it on my Tacoma. I was in the tuning development game wayyy before KD. Anyways. I’ve drove almost everyone’s tune. There are some really good ones out there. But the transmission tuning on this one makes it the number 1 in my book.

If they had a tune for my tacorado aka duramax, I’d run it on that too lol

    Understood.

There's always the option of getting the software/hardware, and you can flash your own tunes. We'll support you directly as a direct client. Should that be an option you'd entertain, we're happy to supply the files direct.
