We need a Greek place here

 

I've got a Greek/Lebanese/Middle Eastern restaurant near me that's a regular stop for us. The Lebanese owner has a PhD in economics and was a economics professor at U of Connecticut...but food was his true love. We're happy for that...his food is amazing and he's a great guy.

 

There are some things I just don't cook around here because it's involved, and they make it better somewhere closeby. Can't find good TX barbecue, anything creole (jambalaya, gumbo, etc), French (in Providence, there's a couple decent places in Boston, but that's a headache), Ethiopian (none in Providence, closest is Boston, that's a rarity we go there, we hit DC more often than that place )

edit - pizza. I can get flour everywhere and make a bangin' pizza, or just go to a couple of the good spots in Providence.

 

this is not a problem at all, you basically made refried beans inadvertently

works great for either dip, tacos or burritos

 

I hear your pain, PVD is all Italian with more Italian on the side.

Picked up some fresh kielbasa at my local Polish bakery/deli this morning. I'll throw them in the smoker tomorrow and have as part of Easter dinner on Sunday.

I'm in EP so I get the good Portuguese too, couple decent mexican places - Taconeando in EP hits hard, they came out of nowhere. Way better than talullah's. Union Burrito is decent enough but Taconeando is next level.

Janhunger in Fox Point is good too.

But yeah, it's italian or a side of italian but wouldn't you know...italian! Makes sense, but there's no decent BBQ, ethiopian, French, haven't looked for egyptian, our indian food is meh, greek there's a few okay places, no German, no Spanish (Actually, have one I need to try that's been recommended), Jahunger is the only chinese chinese place, not americanized chinese.

If you're ever on the cape and looking for French - PB Boulangerie all the way out in Wellfleet, it's a 2 hour drive but it could do well in Paris. Maison Villatte is closer, just in Falmouth and has a sweets shop next door (and a decent Mexican place up the street called Anejo), but their bread isn't as good. Pastries are, but their baguettes don't compete with PB.

 

good to know! We don't get out there very much, if I'm ever just passing through I've always either hit Bear or Rein's. My wife would kill me if I got Ethiopian without her

Thanks for the recommendation though, will keep it in mind for the next time! (We have a plant in Norwich, now that I'm outside the aerospace game, don't get out to Hartford much)

 

Vernon Diner is better than Rein's IMHO

 

You clowns are lucky.

Bellingham WA really has none of that. We can cross the border for Indian and Chinese, but there really is no Italian here. OK pizza places. And the scary thing is 20 years ago it was way worse.

The Greek bowls above are from a food truck at the local brewery - which is our true bright spot Kulshan. Best beer ever. Those are lamb bowls and they give you a ton of meat.

We have some OK breakfast diners and a few hippie places. And some OK Mexican places.

I've got an Indian place and a Chinese place, both of which were written up in the New York Times food section, within four miles of my house. Not unusual to go to the Chinese place and be the only westerners. Big crowd of Chinese professors and grad students from University of Connecticut

 

Someone else said that too - I think Rich, but not sure. Rein's has been a family thing, honestly I've only ever gotten pastrami and fries - sometimes, a slice of cheesecake if I'm feeling it. I think I got bagels to go once?

Well, if I have 2 people telling me independently that Vernon Diner is better, I guess I have to try it.

 

As much as this may sound racist - there's a huge Chinese population at Brown, there are a few joints on Thayer. If I can't understand anyone in the place, to me, that's a good sign. (I don't speak Chinese, I got Spanish and a mediocre at best level of French).

 

My absolute favorite is Peach Farm on Tyler in (Boston) Chinatown. We've made the trip just to have the stir fried pea pod stems.

 

It isn't difficult, but is time consuming. Make a nice avgolemono sauce to go with them.

 

Someone else in my neighborhood Facebook just posted some casserole thing like this. Seems mostly healthy from the nutrient breakdown in the reposted video.
