Shouldn't use the aftermarket filters. They are a Scam! All they do is let massive amounts of dirt in the engine. Just hold up a K&N. just gauze, you can clearly see through.
Impossible they provide any gain. More noise sometimes. Intake system is designed to provide far more air then this small engines could ever use.

I think where you live/drive plays a role on whether or not K&N filters should be used. The TRD CAI uses the same K&N oil style filter.

I recently switched back to the oem paper cabin and engine filters, because they K&N's were getting dirty way too quick here in AZ and I was tired of cleaning them all the time.

I still use the K&N in another vehicle that's not driven as frequently.

    after one drive I a
Yea where inlive is not very dusty, so im not too worried about that. Already noticed a tiny bit more power driving up hills, not having to downshift when i normally would have to

Just don’t let pets or small children get near the intake,,,, it can get ugly, ever seen those videos of the crew getting inhaled in to a fighter jet engine?
    Careful

OP I am running the same intake setup I removed that charcoal filter. None of my other intakes ever had one (nor do any aftermarket for this truck that I could find) and it seemed like one more restriction I didn't want or need. Someone will probably correct me on this, but from what I've read it's mostly a California thing to help capture some kind of engine gasses that can come back out of the motor after it's shut off. Seen some say it doesn't restrict flow, but I took a leaf blower to it after removing it and found it to be a huge restriction. In the dumpster it went, no issues so far with it gone.

Also nice choice with that upgrade, it's all this truck needs. I noticed smoother upshifts/downshifts, increased throttle response and a quieter engine under 4k (then all hell breaks loose).

Weird. My K&N's stay clean asf here even after offroading. Still would like to test out that dryflow engine filter from AFE though.

Good info, thanks! Yea ive also never seen an intake with an extra barrier like the one in the tacoma. I imagined it would restric flow to some degree, so i might just remove it... do you have the trd flow accelerator as well?

I am a proponent of the Green Filter. They seem to hold up better than K&N

So many only look at hp numbers and disregard drivability. I didn't do it for power, but there are many other benefits from an intake upgrade that you gain. Those are the reasons I made the change and I was not disappointed. The truck just feels better, and that's reason enough.

Yep, I have one too. Just noticed today there seems to be a little better throttle response. Maybe just me?

One time i went to change my spark plugs, removed the plugs and the cylinder was packed full of sand!

After said spark plug change i mentioned above. i had the hood up and was listening to it idle when my wife snuck up from the rear of the truck, slide into the cab and revved the engine to scare me, well that intake sucked the hat off my head and the wrench outta my hand!

agreed ! Scam ! If it lets in more air through the same surface area, then how can not also let in more dirt ? To let more air pass through the exact same filter surface, it has to have less filtration . Think about it .
So while it may offer a very very slight power increase .. its at the expense of engine life .
    No thanks .
I’m pretty sure if there was some magic filter material that could filter as good or better, but also let more air pass through , that Toyota themselves would use that for their own filters . Look at the lengths manufacturer’s engineers will go to to squeak another 0.2 mpg or another 2 hp out of an engine . If they could do it with a simple air filter I’m sure they would. Stick with an oem air filter and save your engine.
