Looks like something I would create if I tried to weld.

I really think if they put out some really good mpg numbers that may be the ticket. People are tired of getting half ton mileage...or worse.

I was an engineer for a Tier 1 supplier for Toyota and we hated that piano black as well. It was so hard to keep it defect free...

Still possible that the trail hunter will be. I’ve see some photos that some people took of the prototype. Looked like it had a longer bed for whatever reason. Which is contradictory to off-roading but idk.

I wonder if Toyota would ever consider doing like the half ton trucks with the high hp “off road” oriented truck. Ford will probably be first to market with the Ranger Raptor. But imagine a Tacoma TRD Pro Rainier Edition with a turbo 6 with 253 cubic inch displacement (area code of Tacoma, see a trend?) and 419 horsepower

    just a dumb Friday thought.

I'm calling BS on the V6 part. Too much overlap with the Tundra/Sequoia. 4cyl turbo hybrid I believe though

They essentially are doing that but in a goofy way by adding power with a hybrid. Do their customers actually want that? I certainly don’t. I think it would have made more sense to offer a hybrid that gets great mpg and then a bigger engine non hybrid with higher HP for buyers that prefer that over fuel mileage.

What does that get you and how much was the deposit? Is it that you are locked in to get the specs and trim you are looking for when that particular combo is first available to that particular dealer? Typically aren't deposits for specific vehicles that are in some stage of manufacture or transport? In this case there are no specific vehicles to "pre-order".

It's easier to de-tune forced induction engines (e.g. just dial down the boost) and use the same engine across multiple platforms. Many manufacturers seem to be going this direction. Still, you may be right.

I think the price increase for an HEV might be too much for the average midsize pickup buyer compared to the average full size, but time will tell.
Also not sure how many people are cross-shopping mid and full size trucks (for me, full size trucks won't fit in my garage so they are not even in the running)

Had they gone with a PHEV (I don't think they have a suitable engine for this), which would (in the US) still be eligible for federal tax credits up to $7500 under the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 (for purchases after 4/17/23), it would be easier for buyers to swallow. HEVs aren't eligible for any tax credits.

For midsize trucks, I don't think there are any HEVs or PHEVs in the US market yet, but it looks like there might be a few for the 2024 model year. Ford is apparently going the PHEV route, which may turn out to be an advantage for them since there is a tax credit involved (subject to a bunch of new conditions in the new law, including buyer's income).

If I understand the new tax credit law correctly, a PHEV Tacoma wouldn't be eligible for the credit unless they moved the assembly of the trucks back to the US.

Oh, right, North America final assembly is one of the many new conditions. Something about the hybrid battery manufacture location too.

There is also some bizarre carve-out in the law making it advantageous to lease rather than buy. That one has lobbyists written all over it.
