    Quick question,

I am wondering if I will be able to fit a recovery shackle (d ring) to the stock front passenger towing eyelet. If so what size shackle should I use? I only have SR5 not TRD OR.

    Any help would be appreciated.

I've seen many posts that say to not use the driver side loop because it can't stand the stress because it is just welded on to the frame. Is that just people being a bit too careful?

I cant tell you yes or no on that, but i can tell you from the times i've used it and been STUCKKKKKK it worked like a charm. But it should fit on the passenger side as well.

I've been wondering about this as well:notsure: Me thinks it would be ok, as mine looks to be welded on fairly well

so you just threw on a clevis ring or d ring on the loop or did you just wrap the recovery strap around the loop so it cinches on itself?

Yes you can but it would be a fairly small one.

I haven't measured...is the hole <3/4"? If it is I still might be able to fit a 5/8" clevis (I think the load limit would still be large enough...maybe?)

Manual states not to use the loop welded on the drivers side-

The manual states for emergency towing to use the towing eyelet or hook mounted on the passenger side depending on what is installed on your truck. Among other things, it also says to avoid damaging eyelet/hook do not pull from the side or at a vertical angle-always pull straight ahead.

I am working on fabbing a mount now which would be beefier and could handle a 3/4" shackle like above, but for emergency situations, and or for those who do not have a custom mount, bumper, etc. with shackle mounts, or basically have a stock truck, I believe just opening up the eyelet opening just enough to be able to fit the 7/8" pin size would work. I did not take a before and after shot, but the eyelet stock has a 1/2" boarder around the opening more or less. I did not change the side boarders, but I opened up the hole by going down, or away from the typical contact point while towing or recovering pulling forward. I think it would work for occasional use, what do you guys think? And, its a free mod. If your off roading your stock truck and have no shackle mount options up front, this could be better then nothing for now. For about 10 bucks for a shackle, and a little paint and your good to go. Pictured below is my eyelet modified for a 3/4" shackle, ready to re mount.

 x2!:D On our NorCal Snow Wheelin trip we recently took, we were using those to jerk and pull us stock tacos across the snow when we were high centered (to be honest, even some of the others got stuck...the snow was 4 feet deep). I can at least say that they must be really strong to survive what we were putting them through.

I believe if people are using the non approved welded hook with success, the modified eyelet with a 3/4" shackle should be a stronger set up. Considering Toyota designed the eyelet for emergency use, it should be strong enough to handle our truck's weight, and a 3/4" shackle has a rating of about 10,000lb. We may not need a larger mount for occasional use?
