i have a 09 Tacoma base that has a back up camera on the tailgate and no display in the rear view...

After many searches i still haven’t found the info I’m after.

I understand that the truck is already wired for this and it was a dealer installed option. What I’m trying to figure out is:

What else besides the mirror do i need to make all this work? I haven’t been able to find a write up where someone has done this.

Any info will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance!

You'll need to find a rear view mirror with the LCD screen in it. Funny thing, they wired the truck for it and installed the camera, but the base model had a regular rear view mirror with no screen, go figure. I found one a few years ago used for less than $200 with the LCD screen and auto dimming feature. The new ones are close to $1000, ridiculous. Good luck.

Ive found the mirror for under $100! They are on eBay for $175-$250-

Like what else is needed? Is there a plug up in the headliner there for it? Or do I need to find an oem harness to run up to it?

The harness has the plug just up in the headliner. If the mirror is complete it should have it's wiring and plug that should fit into the harness plug. There's also a plastic telescoping cover you can order (if mirror doesn't come with it) to cover the wiring between the mirror and the headliner. One ends snaps into top of mirror and other end fits inside headliner.

    Reviving an old thread.

Recently bought this 09 base model (regular cab). Extremely low miles (under 8000 on the clock currenlty).

To my surprise, I do have a camera, and wiring leaving the tailgate. I have just the standard mirror however so no dislplay. I am hoping there is wiring inside the headliner, but can't feel it with the edge of my fingers. I can only get a few inches inside the headliner that way, and don't want to drop the whole thing until I have some assurance thee wiring is really there. It would seem odd to think Toyota put the camera and only some of the wiring in at the factory. Does anyone know? Thanks.

No overhead console/sunglass holder or map lamps?

The IO2 is behind the tray covering the cab fuses.

    Hello Caribe,

Correct, no sunglass holder, no console, no map lights.

Thanks very much for the schematic. I'm guessing what you show is in the kick panel on the drivers side. I am working with Bob's Automotive Mirrors (mentioned on other similar threads here and a very helpful guy). He can get me wiring that would run from the kick panel up to an LCD mirror (which I can order from him too). So am guessing this I02 needs a connector that has 14 pins like what connects to the mirror.

Bob says it isn't common, he can remember at least one customer who had a truck like mine that had the full wiring taped to the inside of the headliner where the console would normally be. I'll likely be taking a look there. But if there's nothing there, your info here is very valuable. Thanks again.

    NO:smack:, just 4 wires.
    :rofl::rofl::rofl:

You can remove the driver's side sail panel and verify that the harness is there. It's the one that would require to remove the out-shit-handle by the windshield.

Awesome! (No airbag there to worry about I presume? I think the Gen3 has them there.)

If the TACO had them, there'd be an embossed logo on the panel...take a look. Also, you are removing the cover, not the airbag at all.

Ok, I may be in luck.

I see a black cable running in the A pillar by the drivers side. This looks very much like the cable coming that goes to the tailgate. Guess the final proof will be dropping the headliner.

Am just curious what the long white fabric thing is in the pillar, if it's not the airbag. There is no embossed symbol on the pillar cover with the airbag symbol.

At any rate, thanks for the help!

Yes, white rolled up is the airbag.

Hello Caribe, it's great news on my end!

I removed the sun visors and both pillar covers and it gave me enough room to root around inside the headliner edge. Sure enough, I felt something like a cable with some tape over it. I undid the tape and when I did, I found this:

    14pin connector 1.jpg

    I am super stoked!

I'm going to order the mirror from Bob (known here in TW). Finding this had really made my day. Thanks for your help and all around awesomeness!
