I have not. I use razor blades to clean glass, both vehicular and aquarium. Unless there is a film coat (like tint) and your scraper is scratching the coating, then it is physically impossible for aluminum to scratch glass. On the Moh's scale of hardness (higher numbers scratch lower numbers) Your fingernail is a 2.5, aluminum sits at 2.75, the steel that razors and most pocketknives use is 5.5, and sheet glass shares the same hardness as steel (5.5-6). Its used as a reference standard when describing hardness. This is one of my areas of study.

 

Tough to prove it was the dealers fault or your fault the past few weeks.

there wasn’t one when I got there. I had put down a deposit on it weeks in advance and picked it up the day it got there. Keys were handed to me right away since nobody else had the opportunity to test drive it. Honestly have zero clue what could’ve happened to it to scratch it so significantly. Yesterday was the first day we’ve had sun the last two weeks so it could’ve been there the whole time and just gone unnoticed. I find it hard to believe I wouldn’t have seen it with how much I’ve stared at the thing. Makes me kinda think it might be an issue from me rolling the window down. It would all fall in line with me doing it for the first time since we just got nice weather the last 48 hours.

 

Well I’m going to the dealership on Friday. I have an appointment. They heard me out over the phone after I described and seemed like they will be giving it a good look to see if they can solve the issue for me. Thanks for the responses everyone. Will definitely circle back after I get an outcome.

 

It has been my experience that Toyota dealerships have been good about warranty claims. Domestic dealers not so much. Dealer ASAP.

 

These metals will all scratch glass...depending on force.

 

Must've been all them diamonds and chromium drill bits in my pockets that put that half inch scratch on my cell phone screen, definitely wasn't my keys...

I'm not even a science hater at all, I got my degree in physics, but some people take results from controlled experiments way too far. 3kg can be achieved by a child (that's for the soft metals in hiPSI's list). These experiments are designed to empirically derive a relationship in otherwise complex interactions. Hardness scales are not laws of nature!

OP should get a new window installed by the dealer, this should fall under one of those easy ones to keep their customer happy. I bet you could do it in your driveway if they just gave you the new glass.

 

taking it to the dealer on Friday. Hoping that is the outcome. They were all very nice through purchasing as well as over the phone to schedule. Hopefully it trickles over to the service department lol. my 46k hit their pockets just over a week ago so it’s possible they still like me.

Well update… just got back from the dealership. They said they couldn’t fix the scratch free of cost because they can’t prove when it happened. They said they took a bunch of pictures and are delivering it to Toyota to see if it’ll qualify for their Goodwill Program. If they approve it then they said I can bring it back to have it fixed. Can take up to two weeks to hear back. Has anyone ever dealt with this program? I’m not optimistic.

 

Call Toyota Corporate and politely explain the situation and how you would like it resolved. You just bought the truck. Worst they can say is no.

 

This is the answer. I wouldn't let a dealership touch that - let alone replace the window or something.

 

I would ask if they can share any request information or “claim number” or whatever it is called. I’m skeptical they’ll even ask Toyota,,,, unless you ask for something. If they ask why? , tell em you want to have something you have the info, as you’ll be following up, should they deny the claim.

Why not just go to Wally World and get a Rain-X windshield repair kit ~ $8 fix it and move on with your day? Seems you’re spending way to much precious time on a window scratch.
